West Vancouver Memorial Library · Fall 2004 · Issue 6 The Inquiring Mind Marcus Mosely brings his gospel music to the library. La Candela came together out of a pure and simple love of Cuban music. Hear them at the Library this spring. Exciting News for Music Lovers A generous bequest from the estate of Robert Leslie Welsh will be the foundation for bringing the world of music to the Library through an exciting concert series and some innovative new resources. The Friday night Concert Series will feature a wide range of performers and styles and will be free of charge. The first will be held November 26, when renowned vocalist Marcus Mosely and his gospel singers will give a Christmas concert in the Library's Gallery. In the 2005 season, watch for jazz diva Dee Daniels, some Cuban rhythm, and much more. Look forward to using our new Music Listening Room in 2005, where you will be able to preview and enjoy the Library's renowned collection of CDs. A portion of the bequest will be used as an endowment to build on our already strong collection of music on CD. The Library will also subscribe to two online music libraries, Naxos and Classical.com. Library patrons will be able to listen to a wide variety of classical, jazz, and world music either in the Library or from home on their computers. These subscriptions will include access to biographies, discographies and other resource material. From the Chief Librarian Ann Goodhart Every few years, the District of West Vancouver conducts a survey to determine how residents feel about the Municipality. A survey was conducted earlier this year and the results are available. Of particular interest to us is the section of the survey that asks residents to rate the services they receive from the Municipality. As you can imagine, we were very proud to see that The Library received the highest "very satisfied" rating of any municipal service. Seventy-seven percent of those responding were very satisfied. Another 21% of the responses indicated that residents were somewhat satisfied and only 2% either did not answer or gave the Library a less than satisfactory rating. Equally as good was the fact that your satisfaction rating has increased since the survey in 2001 when the number of you who were very satisfied was seventy-four percent. Of course, we are always looking for ways to serve the community better. In the last two months, we have added wireless Internet access for people who bring their laptops into the Library, opened our computer lab for an additional shift and we are now open from 10:00 to 5:00 on Sundays. In late November, we will have our first Friday evening concert and we are busy planning an exciting series of concerts for next year. Thank you for the high marks. www.vvestvanlib.org tel. 604.925.7400 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver BC V7V 1J8
