West Vancouver Memorial Library · The Inquiring Mind WHAT'S IN A TITLE Suppressed Titles Titles of books are deceptive and, if taken too literally, the element of serendipity remains lost in the pages. Publishers either simplify titles (e.g., A Dictionary of...), or they obliquely emboss their titles with double meanings (e.g., Eureka!], which is a common marketing device to spark the curiosity of potential audiences. So if you're doing a history of automobiles, you can go to the encyclopaedia set with the general title The World of Automobiles, and cry out "end of job, well done!" Or, you can salvage additional knowledge from volumes hidden behind obscure titles. Eureka! is a set of books that reconstructs the stories of inventions, and eureka!... there's an entry for the history of the automobile. Another title, St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, wouldn't you know it, has a history of the role of the auto in popular culture. Now let's try the Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan... Times have changed in West Van... and it's all in pictures - in the collection of over 4000 vintage photographs housed in the Reference Department.
