West Vancouver Memorial Library Helen Davies, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board Have you ever noticed the lovely arrangement of fresh cut flowers at the circulation desk or enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee at an art exhibit opening at the Library Art Gallery? Perhaps, you attend the reception in the Library following the annual Remembrance Day ceremony or look forward to the semiannual book sale. If you have done any one of these things, then you have benefited from the generous contributions made by the Friends of the West Vancouver Memorial Library, an important member of the Library family. The Friends have a long relationship with the Library, having played an instrumental role in fund-raising for the original building. The Society, now comprising about 170 members, has been in existence since 1951, following the official opening of the Library on November 11, 1950, and they continue to support the Library actively through fund-raising and volunteerism. They raise funds through their semi annual book sale, as well as the increasingly popular book cart in the Main Hall. Money raised by the Friends is used to purchase materials and equipment to enhance library service, and in 2003 the Friends sponsored the North Shore Writers Festival, assisted with funding for summer reading clubs and purchased several new pieces of furniture. In addition, the Friends host receptions for Remembrance Day , monthly artist exhibits and author visits. They also volunteer in the Library and deliver books and materials to homebound patrons. On behalf of the West Vancouver Memorial Library Board, I want to acknowledge the Friends of the Library for their ongoing support and thank all of the members for their dedication and service. I am confident that your efforts are and will continue to be well appreciated. North Shore Writer's Festival April 19th - 28th, 2004 Once again the West and North Vancouver libraries will be hosting our fifth annual Festival of readings by Canadian authors. The Friends of the Libraries, the District of North Vancouver, and the B.C. Government Writers in Libraries program are sponsoring this event. John Bishop, of Bishop's Restaurant, will be speaking at West Vancouver, as will Des Kennedy, author of books and columns on gardening. We are holding a poetry workshop with Pandora's Collective for teens and adults. North Vancouver City and District libraries will be featuring events with Barbara Hodgson, Madeleine Thien, Luanne Armstrong, Penny Le Couteur, and our Festival finale will be Elizabeth Hay. And don't forget to enter our Poetry Contest: write a limerick mentioning the North Shore and win a dinner for two at Bishop's Restaurant. Details at your library.
