West Vancouver Memorial Library Helen Davies, Chair West Vancouver Memorial Library Board Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a Library reception for National Volunteer Week, hosted to acknowledge the remarkable contribution that community members make to their Library. Over 80 Library volunteers attended the event, and it was great to see that youth volunteers were well represented. Drop by the library on any weeknight and you will realize that the Library is an important community facility for West Vancouver youth. While the "under six crowd" has long since gone home with treasures picked up earlier in the day, you will see clusters of students meeting to study. In the recent Municipal Youth Survey, many identified the Library as an important meeting place. Teens participate in both the regular Library volunteer program and the Teen Advisory Group (TAG). TAG is comprised of high school students aged 14 to 18 from across West Vancouver. They meet monthly to provide input to and feedback on the Library's current teen services, assist with projects and promote teen involvement at the Library. In 2001, TAG created the Library's entry in the Community Day Parade, winning 1st Place for Best Theme Interpretation. They also helped develop the Municipality's Youth Survey, testing and recommending changes in the draft survey. In 2002 all TAG members received awards during Youth Week. West Vancouver youth are also actively involved in the Library Volunteer Program, and this year helped design and staff the Library's booth at the Youth Volunteer Fair. Youth volunteer Alba Leon who is an exchange student from Mexico received an award for her volunteer contributions at the Library during Youth Week in 2003. So, next time you stop by the Library, I encourage you to take a moment to think about the youth volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to the Library. On behalf of the Library Board, I would like to thank all of them and Julia Hedley, Head of the Youth Department and Volunteer Coordinator, Anne Greenwell, who work diligently to ensure that the Library continues to be a teen-friendly place! West Vancouver Teen Wins First Prize Justin Chen, 17-year-old Sentinel Secondary School student, created the dynamic bookmark that earned first prize in the North Shore/Howe Sound/ Sechelt region of this year's Public Library InterLINK Youth Week Bookmark Contest. 10,000 copies of Justin's bookmark, along with bookmarks designed by the other five regional winners, were distributed through all the participating libraries. Justin was presented with a cheque for $100, a blow-up poster of his design and 25 copies of the printed bookmark. Congratulations Justin, for your fantastic accomplishment, and for helping spread excitement about teens and Libraries! Alba Leon and Justin Chen
