West Vancouver Memorial Library · Spring/Summer 2003 · Issue The Inquiring Mind Reading Clubs for All Ages Children who read or are read to develop, maintain and improve their literacy skills and discover great books that are just plain fun. Don't miss out on the fun this summer. There is a reading club for everyone! Set the Stage - Read! will appeal to elementary school children. Readers can pick up a packet of materials June 16 or after, and start recording the books they read. Members drop in any time and tell us about books, collect weekly prizes, and enter draws. Our theme celebrates performers of all kinds and we offer optional weekly programs focusing on painting, music, writing, puppetry and theatre. Check out the schedule and make note of sign-up dates as registration for programs is limited. Children not yet reading are encouraged to join the Read-To-Me Club. Parents, grandparents and siblings can join the fun and record every title read to the club member. Bring the booklet to the Youth Information Desk and collect stickers and incentives. Six years ago we established a Teen Reading Club. This year's club is called "Lights! Camera! Action!" For every title read, youth going into grades 8 to 12 can collect gold dot stickers. Prizes are awarded for the number of stickers collected. Teen Reading Club members can earn coupons for local food outlets, books or even fashion jewellery. We thank the many local businesses who have contributed prizes for this club. All library programs are FREE. For information about Reading Clubs and other Youth Department programs, call 604-925-7408. From the Head of the Youth Department Julia Hedley More than 1000 West Vancouver children will join the province-wide Summer Reading Club this summer! Each one will be given a beautiful package of materials designed by B. C. artist Laura Cook. The Library Services Branch of the provincial government together with the British Columbia Library Association sponsor the Club. At this library we are very grateful for additional support from our Friends of the Library. A group of children's librarians from around the province have been meeting by conference call since last summer to develop the concept for this year's Set the Stage -Read! Club. I was a member of the Summer Reading Club Committee this year. It is rewarding indeed to think that every child who enters a public library in British Columbia this summer will be offered the same enticing reading record, this time shaped like a theatre stage. The most rewarding part for us will come this summer - when Youth Department staff are swept along in the excitement as readers take centre stage, tell us about the great books they have read and clamour for more.
