BOOKtopia 2007 - Donna Simon The Third Annual BOOKtopia West Vancouver Children's Literature Festival was held in early May. Children were taken on a whirlwind tour of the wonderful stories, poems and art work to be found between the covers of books. The opening reception on Friday, May 4, held at the Library featured the Children's Artwork Display. Many of the young artists dressed formally for the occasion. Friends serving refreshments were; Cathie Clinch, Natalie Logan, Kim Vogt and Sophia Weremchuk. Artist and author, Janet Stevens, delighted grade two students with her presentation at the Kay Meek Centre on May 10. Grade five students were entertained on May 11, by Governor General Award winning author-illustrator, Marie-Louise Gay. She also did a presentation en français at the library for grade four classes from Ecole Pauline Johnson and conducted an illustrator's workshop for secondary school art students. Poets from Vancouver Poetry House presented slam-style poetry to grade seven creative writing students in their classroom. Students had the opportunity to produce poetry and deliver it in their own voice. On the evening of Friday, May 11, BOOKtopia hosted the Ripple Effect Press launch of Wordscapes: B.C. Youth Writing Anthology 2007. Again, young writers read their award winning contributions. The final event on Saturday morning, May 12, was the Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre performance of The Reluctant Dragon based on the book by Kenneth Graham. Skillful puppeteers handled both bunraku and hand and rod puppets. The gentle dragon battled the famous dragon slayer, Sir George, to the delight of over 400 children and adults. This was an entertaining end to a most successful festival. Thanks to the Friends of the Library who were volunteers at various events: Kay Alsop, Ann and Bill Busay, Marvin Childs, Colette Guibert, Wayne Leigh-Spencer, Arden McLaughlin, Marilyn Miller, Fanny Patterson, Joanna Scott, Donna Simon, Joanne Wallis, and Sophia Weremchuk.
