The Volunteer Appreciation Tea was held on April 18th, to recognize community members who volunteer their time and energy to help make the Library a "Cornerstone of the Community". Everyone received a delightful teacup and saucer along with a volunteer pass to the community. Tea, treats, and conversation was enjoyed by all those who attended. Teen Movie Night - 14 teens attended the screening of "Step up" on March 16. A project of the Library's Teen Advisory Group, these are held after the Library closes on Friday evening and the attendance is growing. Friday Night Concert Series - a crowd of 110 people turned out on March 23 to hear the six piece band Olam play an upbeat set that many commented was just what they needed to lift their mood on such a rainy night. Listening to Mike Braverman, one of Canada's leading jazz clarinettists was one of the many highlights of the evening. The refreshments served by the Friends were enjoyed by all. The next concert will be held Friday, June 22, 7:30 PM., featuring Sara Marreiros - a wonderful blend of Portuguese Fado and jazz stylings. May Morning Music Appreciation - North Shore composer Michael Conway Baker's musically illustrated talks about the works of modem composers held on three Monday mornings. The last one will be held May 28. Conway Baker, a candid and entertaining speaker, aimed the series at "classical music lovers who hate (or love) music from the 20th century." Computer Classes - There are always new computer classes being offered FREE. Ulysses Reading Group - Attendance continues to grow, threatening to overflow the Peter J. Peters Room. The group has booked additional dates in the late spring and plans to meet throughout the fall to finish their reading. The Gallery at the Library - A companion to BOOKtopia's literary events and coinciding with Youth Week, this special exhibition, celebrating 'Books and Reading', showcased original works of art from the tiny hands of preschoolers to the sophisticated visions of graduating students. The opening reception on May 4th was hosted by the Friends of the Library. Doc Talks Series - Lori Breen The Library began the "Doc Talks", documentary and discussion, series in September 2006 as part of an international initiative called the September Project, (www.theseptemberproject.org). We presented the film "Shake Hands with the Devil", about Romeo Dallaire's return visit to Rwanda and due to patron interest we decided to continue the Doc Talks program in 2007. Globalization and the affects on developing countries was the theme for the spring series which began in February, with the film "Life + Debt" about Jamaica. In March, the award winning film "Darwin's Nightmare" about the people of Tanzania was presented. The last film in the series, "Fidel: The Untold Story" a biography on Fidel Castro focussed on the small island country excluded from the global community. The Friends of the Library were available to serve popcorn. If you are interested in any of these documentaries and missed the series, they are all available in the Library's DVD collection.
