Friends of the Library Issu 191, May 2007 West Vancouver Memorial Library WHAT'S NEW ?- Grace Kravac The Friends of the Canadian Libraries hosted a session at the recent BC Library Association Conference which was held April 21st, at the Metrotown Hilton. Edda Davis and I attended this free session to see what was new on the scene. The three speakers were: Nicholas Spillios, President of FOCAL; Lawrence Lavender, President of BC Library Trustees; and Paul Whitney, Librarian with the Vancouver Public Library. We are currently not a member of FOCAL, but certainly have the option of joining. Friends of the Library groups in Canada are invited to join Friends of Libraries USA (FOLUSA), which allows Friends from all over the world to ask and answer questions and share successful practices among Friends. www.folusa.org/sharing/listserv.php. Some of the questions that arose at the end of the session made us feel very fortunate to have such tremendous support from our Library staff and Trustees. As our Library is so busy with meetings, concerts, and films, thereby limiting space, we have already set the date for our next book sale which will be September 20, 21, 22, 2007, AND while we were at it, we also booked next spring March 13, 14, 15,2008. Mark it on your calendar! As there are always many books left over from our book sales, which are unable to be returned to storage due to a lack of space, Peggy Keene has accepted the responsibility of maintaining a roster of charitable organizations that are interested and are willing to pick up these books after our sale. Please contact Peggy at (604)922-2991 if you know of any organizations that would benefit from receiving these books, i.e. schools, nursing homes, clinics, etc. Be creative! As Edda Davis has consented, with a little arm twisting, to fill in as Vice President, Robbie Innis has accepted to be a Member-at-Large. Thank you to ALL reception helpers, those members who helped with BOOKtopia, and to the volun-, teers who will be working at the Foundation's Croquet Tournament. Also, we could not do without the volunteers who pick up supplies and clean up after meetings, and supply fresh flowers to keep the Library looking cheery. Sophia Weremchuk will add her enthusiasm to the Library Foundation's Advocacy Committee, accompanying Edda Davis. The Foundation requested our assistance in a huge donor mail-out. Under the direction of Karen Brown, our assembly line consisted of Maureen Eagle, Joan MacArthur, Sophia Weremchuk and myself. A resolution to our Constitution and Bylaws has been passed: "that the Directors be empowered to make all decisions regarding applications for funding received by the Society from the West Vancouver Memorial Library, which has been approved by the Library Board, during the months when the Society does not hold a general meeting, an extraordinary annual meeting or an annual general meeting." This is to cover any emergency expenditures that may arise. DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES-Ann Goodhart A request for the Friends to match the government grant for the Summer Reading Program was approved. New Library cards to coincide with the new website launch. The Friends may have an "FOL" sticker attached to their cards which will identify them for their 10 free reserves.
