BOOK CART REPORT - Patricia Treadwell On a recent summer's day Chris and Patricia Treadwell hosted an afternoon tea in their home for Friends of the Library who generously tend the Book Cart year-round, and also to the Book "Pit Crew", who sort and prepare the material for sale. Teacups were filled and refilled; there were tasty treats served including a special fresh bundt cake prepared by Leo Hubner, who enjoys baking!! Acting President Grace Kravac, unfortunately was unable to attend, but sent greetings and thanks from the executive in recognition of the many hours volunteered by the Friends. A pleasurable, social afternoon enjoyed by all. MOVIE NIGHTS Are there a couple of movie buffs that would like to assist Lori Breen to serve popcorn on the following evenings? This most recent in our West Vancouver Memorial Library's popular Concert Series featured multi-talented frontman/singer Alexis Puentes on guitar, Jose Sanchez on drums, Myles Bigelow on conga drums and Allan Johnston on bass, and they literally "had the joint jumping" that evening. One very young man, in particular, just couldn't sit still. No more then seven months old, he bounced delightedly up and down in his mom's lap, now and then glancing back over his shoulder, eyes sparkling, obviously expecting those behind him to share his enthusiasm. And they did! Actually, it would have been hard to find anyone in the audience who wasn't caught up in the beat, whose toes weren't tapping, shoulders swaying, or hands clapping in time with the infectious Latin American music. At one point, Alexis called for someone to come up to the front and dance with him, and delightful Debbie Low from Langley actually did that, twisting, twirling and turning in a very credible salsa. ("I've only had two lessons!" she confided later.) Thanks again to the generous bequest of Robert Leslie Welch, this event was another in the ongoing series of musical evenings offering everything from blues singers to tango trios, African bands and even opera ensembles, and all of the highest calibre. Alexis Puentes, for instance, recently won a Juno Award for best new recording, and was booked to perform July 7th in New York's Central Park. (Oddly enough, Cuban-born Alexis is married to a Canadian girl and makes his home in Smithers, B.C. when not on the road with his band. His drummer, Jose Sanchez, is also Cuban-born. Conga player Myles Bigelow, however, claims Montreal as his headquarters, while bass player Allan Johnston is practically a hometown boy, living as he does in New Westminster.) Friends of the Library members Kay Alsop, Edda Davis, June Harris, Irene Graham and Marlene Scott served punch and cookies before the performance. BOOKTOPIA 2006 - An Oopsie! Two very enthusiastic Friends were inadvertently missed in our roster of volunteers: Fanny Patterson and Joanne Wallis. A belated "Thank you".
