2 Issue 185, May 2006 West Vancouver Memorial Library MEMBERSHIP - Maureen Eagle A warm welcome to Joyce Alderman who joined the Friends recently. We hope to meet her soon. New member Joan MacArthur has volunteered to take over the fresh flower duties. Whenever she is going by the Library door, she pops in to check on the arrangements. Now that is dedication! Rosemin Ebrahim has accepted to take over the editorship of our newsletter in September. Thank you Rosemin for fitting this into your very busy schedule. It was noted in the North Shore News during Volunteer Week, that WVML thanked all their volunteers. Also, at a recent Library Board Meeting, the "Friends were applauded for all their work in 2005". Ann Goodhart commented on "how much the library staff and patrons appreciate the warmth that the Friends bring to all of the events that they host..." "Man needs to serve a greater cause than himself" Victor Frankl REPORT FROM DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES Ann Goodhart announced that the first three new Daisy format talking books funded by the Province have arrived, and the Friends have agreed to purchase four more this year. A PC devoted to the Tumblebooks database has been purchased and is in the process of being prepared for deployment in the Youth Department. The Friends have budgeted $3500 to fund this workstation. In 2005 the Friends funded the purchase of a C D and D V D repair machine, which cleans and polishes up to 100 discs at a time. "Staff Picks" which is now 10 years old, is so popular that some patrons now living out of the Province request that a copy be mailed to them. What a great service! BOOKTOPIA 2006 - Michelle Sproule BOOKtopia, the West Vancouver Children's Literature Festival, is an annual festival of children's literature intended to promote literacy, celebrate language arts and cultivate creative thought in West Vancouver. Events included author visits, illustrator's workshops, poetry readings, storytelling, writers' workshops, poetry slams and an art exhibition. BOOKtopia 2006 was a great success! Thank you to the following Friends of the Library who generously donated their time and sparkling smiles to make BOOKtopia events run so smoothly: Ann and Bill Busay, Marvin Childs, Collette Guibert, Peggy Keene, Wayne Leigh-Spencer, Arden McLaughlin, Joanna Scott, Donna Simon, Patricia Treadwell. Also helping out with the BOOKtopia art exhibition reception: Edda Davis, Norma Scott, and Kim Vogt.
