story, and that's what I usually did. After viewing that film, however, I will never be as uninvolved again. Since spending those 92 minutes watching it, I no longer have the self-righteous conviction that the dilemma of people there is their own, not my problem. I now know that the bell tolls for all of us, even those lucky enough to live here in beautiful West Vancouver. This was made all too clear at the conclusion of the documentary when its producer, Nettie Wild, and Doug Lang, the police detective prominently featured in the film, answered questions from the audience. I had been particularly moved by Detective Lang's quite evident compassion for street people in the film, and shocked later when he said that drug addiction is already prevalent in our high schools here. When I realized that he had offered his services on our municipal council - the election was next day - I secured a handful of his cards, handed them out to people in my building, and phoned as many as I could to ask them to give him their vote. Unfortunately, he didn't make it this time but, hopefully, he will run again and in that case I will campaign for him - and all because Maureen Eagle and I were the Friends lucky enough to be giving out popcorn that night! Which brings me to the conclusion that this Library of ours is of vital importance to this community in so many ways. Its outreach is enormous, its overall influence exceptional, and its horizons beyond its physical borders. I am so proud to be one of its Friends.
