MEMBERSHIP The delightful new Story house was the venue for our October meeting. Although we didn't serve tea and coffee, the refreshments provided were enjoyable. It is encouraging to see so many Friends attending and participating in our monthly luncheon meetings and contributing to the activities of our Society. The Friends are respected members of the Library family and have an essential role to play. The Library Board representative, Fanny Patterson, reiterated the Board's appreciation of the Friends, and of the continuing support we give to the Library. MUSIC SERIES "Family night at the Opera" scheduled for October 21 , was cancelled as a result of job action due to the teachers' strike. It has been tentatively re-scheduled for March of next year. However, we are looking forward to November 25 when the Library's concert series will open with Juno Award winner, Alpha Yaya Diallo. Free tickets are available at the Fiction Desk. The Library's Concert and Music series are funded by the generous bequest of Robert Leslie Welsh. CALL TO ARTISTS The Library held its annual "Call to Artists" on October 15 . Natalie Logan and Edda Davis arrived early Saturday morning to assist with the organization of the pieces for jury selection. Each art exhibit is on display for one calendar month, with the artists' receptions being held on the first Friday of the month. ARTISTS' RECEPTION November's Gallery presentation, "The Art of Cartooning", features the works of Graham Harrop, an editorial cartoonist for The Vancouver Sun, as well as The Globe and Mail, along with John Mythen's cartoons, which have enlightened the pages of several British publications. He also wrote and illustrated the book Claude: MSing Around. About 40 guests enjoyed the delightful evening, which was punctuated with gales of laughter, as they sipped their tea and coffee from "...real china cups". Thank you to reliable Edda Davis, first-timer Anne Scott, and co-ordinator Kim Vogt. Kim was fortunate enough to receive a complimentary copy of Graham's, "A Day in Vancouver". One of the perks of being a coordinator! Facetious, abstemious, abstentious, arsenious are the only four words in the English language that contain the vowels a, e ,i, o, and u in their proper order.
