MUSIC SERIES The fourth and final musical evening in this popular series featured "The Fraser Valley Fiddlers", a group of nine young musicians aged eight to sixteen, whose amazing performances charmed the 118 ticket holders in attendance on April 22nd. The gifted young virtuosos, brought together as a group three years ago by their proud teacher Lorraine Grescoe, receive rave notices wherever they appear, and small wonder. Their programme ranged widely from haunting classics to rollicking folk tunes, all joyously performed. According to Ms. Grescoe, they are not just dedicated violinists but multi-faceted, well-rounded, exemplary pre-teeners. Kenny, 14, winner of the 2003 PNE Talent Search, has the aura of a seasoned performer. He will be joining the National Youth Orchestra for the summer. His younger sister Winnie has won numerous scholarships from local musical festivals. Tanya, a finalist in last year's PNE Talent Search, is also an accomplished pianist. Elaine is as well-known as a competitive swimmer as she is a violinist. Danielle plays trumpet in her school band, and is also a keen soccer player. Doris, a former flute player with her school orchestra, works weekends as a junior secretary in her mother's office. Krystel, an excellent pianist, is currently concertmaster of the Dominion Youth Orchestra. Jennifer, who is as skilled on the piano and viola as she is on the violin, has won many awards at the Richmond Musical Festival. And tiny Jessica, only eight years old, has award-winning talents far outstripping her age group, and all the aplomb of a seasoned veteran. Librarian (Adult Department) Sue Kent welcomed guests to this final concert funded by the generous bequest of Library benefactor Robert Leslie Welsh. As always, the Friends of the Library provided punch and cookies, hosted by Kay Alsop, Marlene Scott. President Sophia Weremchuk. ALL-CANDIDATES MEETING Two all-candidates meetings were planned by the West Vancouver Memorial Library Board in preparation for the May 17, 2005 provincial election. The first event featured the candidates for the West Vancouver/Garibaldi riding. Three out of four candidates - Dennis Perry of the Green Party, Barbara Reid of the Conservative Party, and Lyle Fenton from the NDP - were introduced by Bernie Lauser, chairman of the evening and also Chairman of the Board of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. The Liberal candidate, Joan McIntyre, did not appear. It seemed she was otherwise engaged. An attentive audience of 100 interested prospective voters listened as each candidate presented his/her party's platform, then fielded questions from the floor. The second meeting held on May 13th, presented an opportunity for the West Vancouver/Capilano candidates to make their presentations. The Friends of the Library, headed by President Sophia Weremchuk, hosted the Green Room prior to the events for candidates and their entourages, offering cheese trays, fruit and cookies, coffee and tea. They also offered fruit punch to the audience before the meeting began. Hosting the events were Kay Alsop, Noelene Harland, June Harris, Betty O'Sullivan, Joanna Scott, Marlene Scott, Tom Reid. AUTHOR VISIT The Library featured a special evening commemorating the launch of Edith Adams Omnibus with Vancouver's culinary historian Elizabeth Driver, former Vancouver Sun Food editor; Eve Johnson, Woodward's Food Floor's consultant, and Mona Brun. Refreshments were served by hosting Friends Noelene Harland and Sophia Weremchuk.
