CONGRATULATIONS TED HILL! On the occasion of his upcoming 89th Birthday on October 31st, all the Friends sang Happy Birthday at the luncheon meeting as they presented a birthday cake emblazoned with a big "89". The Friends presented Ted with a lovely flowering plant along with a card filled with good wishes. Ted's milestone birthday presented us with the opportunity to express our thanks for his dedication of more than 8 years to our Newsletter, researching and producing such informative articles in "Treasures of our Memorial Library". It was a celebration of mixed emotions as Ted has decided that it is time to retire his "pen". However, we have another two articles submitted by Ted to be published in forthcoming issues. We will then repeat some of his previous but very engaging contributions. Thanks again, Ted, for an outstanding job which makes the Newsletter something to look forward to. Although he has put his pen to rest, Ted will still be actively pricing our valuable "red dot" books. He rarely misses a meeting and if he does it's usually because he is travelling the globe. Ted, we all wish you many more years. MEMBERSHIP Maureen Eagle reported that there were no new members since our book sale in September. However, renewals are steadily coming in. Lillian Chow sent a message thanking the Friends for their good wishes and we are happy to report that she is in the recovery stage after her surgery and expects to be back attending meetings and helping out at art receptions soon. We look forward to her return. BOOK CART SALES We must be doing something right! Our book cart sales continue to surpass all our expectations, and location has been the key. We again had a terrific summer netting $3677 from June 24 to October 27 and our year to date totals $8,831. BOOK CART REPLENISHING So much of our success with the book cart is the team effort that goes into keeping the cart replenished and the dedicated work of the "Pit Crew". Good work and our thanks to the October team, Cathy Clinch, Betty O'Sullivan, Edda Davis. Also, thanks to Barbara Drummond and Noreen Avery who re-organized the cart separating fiction from non-fiction. Thanks, Ian Loudon, this suggestion has been a winner! We now have a challenge keeping the non-fiction books stocked. Betty's suggestion of keeping the bottom cupboards unlocked is working well. TREASURER'S REPORT Ian Loudon reported the financial statement covering the period from June 24 to October 27, 2004: General Account $19,085. Expenses 3,755. Total Funds $15,330. The Gaming Account balance remains at $37. This is a separate account which is not included in the total funds. We have committed approximately $9,500. to the Library's 2004 Wish List, including the sound system and computers, which has not been expended to date. (A full Financial Report and copies of the Minutes are available from the Library's Administration Office - see Lori during office hours.)
