AUTHOR VISITS On August 23rd the Library welcomed best selling mystery/thriller writer, J.A. Jance. This Amencan award-winning mystery author travelled from Seattle for this reading, and although it was a dark and rainy night, she spoke to a full house and no one was disappointed. Jance shared her life struggles with the audience, and also spoke of a murder 34 years ago on an Indian Reservation, which has been a constant in her life. September 23rd, retired Justice Wallace Silby Craig gave a talk about the life and times of skid road in Vancouver, or as it is now commonly referred to as Downtown Eastside. His discussion on the seriousness of the Vancouver drug problem, on law, justice and the sentencing of criminals elicited many questions from his listeners. These two great events were hosted by Friends Edda Davis and Sophia Weremchuk. Our refreshments were a big hit with the guests and very much appreciated by the authors. CAPILANO KIWANIS CLUB Wonderful news! The Kiwanis Club of Capilano has again donated $1000 to the Friends of the Library for the purchase of audio books for the print impaired on the North Shore. Since 1998 they have generously donated $7500 for this worthy program. NORTH SHORE WRITERS' FESTIVAL We recently received a special thank you from Pam Douglas, our Library's Program Co-Ordinator, for the Friends contribution to the North Shore Writers' Festival. Our share for 2004 was $1916, and we have committed to continue our support for the Writers' Festival. We wish to congratulate our West Vancouver Memorial Library together with the North Vancouver District and North Vancouver City for receiving the BC Library Merit Award for the "North Shore Writers' Festival" program. 2004 SUMMER READING CLUB Despite the heavy rain, about 400 turned out for the medal presentation ceremony on Friday, September 10th, to honour the young readers who enthusiastically read 15 minutes a day for 50 days or more during the summer. As Mayor Wood congratulated the children, parents eagerly took advantage of the photo opportunity. Friends hosting, Edda Davis, Barbara Drummond, Grace Kravac, and Sophia Weremchuk had several challenges that evening keeping control of the cookies and pouring the drinks to everyone's liking. Despite all, the evening was a lot of fun and even Mayor Wood had time to enjoy a cup of coffee. CIVIC DINNER The Friends were once again invited to The District of West Vancouver's Mayor & Councillors Civic Dinner at the Gleneagles Community Centre on Friday, September 17th. The dinner is to thank all volunteers in the community for their commitment and hard work. Councillor Pam Goldsmith-Jones showered the Friends with many accolades for all the support they give the Library including the ever-present fresh flower bouquets. As your representative Sophia Weremchuk, Maureen Eagle and Grace Kravac attended. The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 From 12 - 2 PM In the Library's Peter J Peters Room Bring your lunch - coffee and tea provided
