A very special "thank you" went to Ann Goodhart for her continued support and guidance. Thanks to the entire Library Staff who continue to help the Friends achieve and fulfill their purpose and to Lori Breen who is always there to give a helping hand. Sophia also thanked all the Friends, executive and committee heads who quietly come in and donate their time to ensure our activities are carried out and who do a great job ensuring it all happens. You are the "Silent Heroes". CHIEF LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Ann Goodhart told of another busy year of achievements and hard work at the Library. The Reference Department quiet study rooms were completed and the group study rooms had the tables refinished with the last of the Gaming Commission money from the Friends. Roof repairs are on going and automatic doors for the handicapped have been installed in two washroom. The Staff are now using an Intranet with information and links to the many sources. There is also a colour Xerox machine installed as a network printer for all the Internet stations which also allows colour photocopying. As it is a coin operated machine, the Library anticipates a savings in paper and toner costs in 2004. The Strategic Plan for 2003-2005 was completed by a committee and a set of guiding principles was developed. Staff are implementing the 2002 operational review and a review of the Technical Services Department was conducted. A new position of Manager of Operations was developed. The Library circulated over a million items in 2003 for the first time in its history- up 2.6% from 2002. The North Shore Writers Festival was held in conjunction with the two North Vancouver Libraries and was a great success. The Friends helped by providing funds. The new Philosopher's Cafe had three programs in the fall which drew a nice group of people. The Youth Department had the most successful Summer Reading Club ever. They also created their usual magic with puppet shows, craft programs, school tours and an active Teen Advisory Group. The "Inquiring Mind" newsletter was launched in 2003 with three issues. "It was definitely a busy and productive year. The Library staff continue to rise to every challenge and give the best possible service to the public."
