SPECIAL RECEPTION A Reception was held on Friday, October 17 to acknowledge the "Gifts to the Library" Donor Recognition Boards. Even though it was a rainy evening, many donors attended the ribbon cutting ceremony. The "Gifts to the Library" boards list the donations to the library since 1993. The Friends of the Library are listed under Patrons - $100,000 and over. Photos of the evening were in the "Bright Lights" section of the October 22nd North Shore News. Thanks to Friends, Edda Davis, Noelene Harland, Grace Kravac, Betty O'Sullivan and Kim Vogt for being outstanding hosts. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and In the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Bead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we He In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we grow The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. John McCrae (1872-1918) AUTHOR VISITS Although we are featuring this event under author visits it was actually a slide show entitled "Window to Iran Project" presented by students of Capilano College. They wanted to show the beauty of Iran and its people they had discovered on a trip there. It was most interesting and enjoyed by the more than 40 in attendance. There was a lively question &. answer period. Friends hosting were: Edda Davis, Claire Giberson, and Sophia Weremchuk. HELP WANTED Memory Book Coordinator: We need one or two Friends who will volunteer to keep our book up to date. The Friends of the Library have been around for over 50 years and the Friends Memory Book is a record of our achievements. We started the book in conjunction with our 50th Anniversary in the year 2000. Interested? Please call Grace @ 604-921-8333. CHIEF LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Ann Goodhart reported that on Sunday, Sept. 21st there were 61 "eager library patrons" waiting to enter the library when they opened at 1:00 p.m. The following Sunday there were 85 people waiting outside! The Library's school programs and tours have commenced for the new school year. The library is offering a Pro-D day for teachers and one of the Librarians attended "Meet the Teacher Night". The roof repair above the West Wing has caused closure of some parking spaces. This will continue until the leak is found and repaired. The computer courses are going well and are extremely popular.
