(Continued from page 3) "Bookmobile Driver". Their salaries, naturally, vary widely, according to such factors as qualifications, responsibilities and workloads. Incidentally, I have quietly asked several staff members how they feel about their individual salary levels. I gathered the impression that some of the staff feel their salaries might justifiably be increased somewhat, but most believe their tasks and emoluments are generally similar to the levels at other Lower Mainland Libraries. The Chief Librarian pointed out that the great majority of staff here are women, and hence subject to the general discrepancy that their wages should be set somewhat lower than those for men holding similar positions. She pointedly observed also that teachers and museum curators generally are better paid than library staff in similar circumstances. Several of our staff ventured the opinion that their marginal salaries in many instances are bolstered to some extent by the satisfaction of dealing with interesting books and of serving a grateful public. Social importance, indeed! Most of our library staff are permanent employees with fixed hours of work, but others are casual folks, often called in to work extra hours , perhaps because of seasonal demands. Such personnel may include, for instance, our thirteen "Shelvers" or our one "Temporary Summer Student". Recently the B.C. Teachers' Federation has been distributing small book marks bearing the statement -- "Everyone has the right to a free, quality education." That is thought-provoking, and it is clear that our library staff are abundantly supporting this priceless program.
