Treasures of our Memorial Library Our Art's In The Right Place I suppose that, if one posed the question, "What is our Library's main function?' the favorite answer would be something like this: "The provision of written materials to as many patrons as possible". That seems to "go without saying", but I would add that a close second would concern the supply of entertainment and instruction in the form of eye-catching materials other than books. Such would include videos, CD's crossword and jig-saw puzzles and works of art. I would add also unusual items, such as our magnificent stained-glass panel, our cherished "Book of Remembrance", the mural paintings in the children's "Story House", and first and foremost, our very own "Art Gallery". This very active derivative of our library is a "movable feast". As its presentations are changed monthly, their freshness and variety are constantly assured. They are chosen primarily for their quality and their wide appeal, which are quickly obvious. Briefly, the Library's Art Show program is operated by the Visual Arts Committee of the W.V. Memorial Library. Until last year, as many as sixteen exhibitions were presented through the year, but the present schedule calls for one showing per month. In 2001, sixteen shows were held, presenting the works of 28 artists in solo, duo or trio groups, and over sixty artists exhibiting in two group shows. These latter two shows were held in cooperation with the Harmony Arts Festival and the West Vancouver Sketch Club. Once a year, the Visual Arts Committee advertises a "Call to Artists", inviting artists to submit works for possible exhibit in the library. Submission requirements include the following: A - Three finished and framed works. (Decorative tiles are not framed). B - Must not have been shown in the Library, Ferry Building or the "Silk Purse" within the past twelve months. C - A portfolio of additional work. D - Proposed theme of the works. E - Current Curriculum Vitae. F - Artist must be a resident of our North Shore, including Bowen Island and Lions Bay. Selection of exhibitors is decided by a committee of three persons, usually including two professional artists and a member of the Visual Arts Committee. The judging is done in a single day, and despite the high standards of the judges, generally only a few of the artist applicants are turned away. Among our exhibitors in the past have been two of the library's own staff, Lisa Klepak and Robert Florian. Several others of our exhibitors have been fulltime professional artists, living by and for their art. The range of materials which grace our gallery is eclectic indeed, spanning oils, pen-and-ink sketches, watercolours, photographs, pastels, collages and tiles. Thus the tastes and interests of a wide range of patrons are abundantly met. The Friends provide (Continued on page 5)
