PRESIDENT'S REPORT Sophia Weremchuk in her report commented that 2001 ended on a high note of accomplishments for the Friends. The March, July and December book sales produced a revenue of $5,880 and the Book Cart sales made $5,436 giving a total of $11,316. This was $2000 less than last year. Having the sales inside the Peter J. Peters Room as well as using the lobby area outside, has helped give us more breathing room. In 2001, the Friends contributed $24,161 to the Library for a sound system; suspended acoustic panels; 7 paper-back racks; a digital camera; chairs and cushions and contributions to the Youth Services summer reading program. We also contributed to the Remembrance Day reception, the Christmas party, Lillian Chow's retirement party, and flowers for the library. In addition, we also covered the preparation and mailing costs of this Newsletter. The Friends continue to host the Artist's Receptions with Barbara Drummond coordinating. Our AGM lunch meeting was a celebration of our 50 years of service to the WVML. Thirty West Vancouver residents created this group on the 14th November 1951. I'm sure they would be proud of our accomplishments and our longevity. We thank our members, the Staff, the Board and the Foundation for their continuing support and encouragement, and just being there for us. CHIEF LIBRARIAN'S REPORT In her report, Ann Goodhart said that a small collection of DVD's was purchased by both Youth and Adult Services to test patron interest and demand. If they are popular, they will be looking for funding for a baseline collection. A third Story Time for Babies is being added at the request of some mothers. Youth Services received a grant from B.C. Writers Association for a program by Polly Horvath a Vancouver Island author. There will now be circulating copies of videos of the Council meetings available to take home or view in the Library language lab. The first day back from the Christmas closure was the 2 busiest ever for the Library with almost 8,000 books checked in and 6,000 checked out. The Yaghoobi family has donated $10,000 to be used for the purchase of library materials in memory of their son, Payam. He was killed in a car accident outside the library last February. A small reception was held for the family in January. The Friends of the Library Grant Request to the Gaming Commission was rejected as there was too much money on hand. This was to fund four networked coin operated printers to be connected to the Internet stations. It was our hope that this would improve our cost recovery on Internet printing. We will review the application. Ann Goodhart will be taking leave from the Library March 8th to 26th. Ted Benson will be in charge during her absence. PARKING To avoid parking tickets white attending meetings at the Library; please check where you park. Longer term parking is available on the roof or in the new parking lot next to the Library.
