PRESIDENT'S REPORT Sophia Weremchuk reported that the year 2000 was indeed a year to celebrate. We too celebrated 50 years of service. We still do whatever we can to help the library and it's patrons, providing refreshments for social functions and raising funds towards furnishings and the little "extras" for our cherished Library. The Group Study Area project was completed in November and has been dedicated to the memory of Tony Scammell. We sponsored and coordinated the Remembrance Day reception. We continue to host the monthly Artist's Reception which they greatly appreciate. In March the Friends served coffee and cake at the signing of the B.C. 2000 Book. Dr. Azarm's reception in October and the Library's 50th Birthday Party in November were the other significant events at which the Friends assisted in the hosting. Surpassing all expectations, income from our book sales in June, the mini sale in November, and the book cart, totaled $13,366.13. Can we do better in 2001? Thanks to Barbara Drummond, the Friends now have a Photo Album. This is a huge ongoing project. We are extremely proud of our members - Marie Moscovitch, received a "Citizen of the Year" award; Barbara Drummond and Marion Nodwell were recognized in the North Shore News as "Silent Heroes". Friends' Funding in 2000 included: Group Study Area and furniture $28,008.00 Advantage Display 1,762.00 Case for Display 273.00 Summer Reading Club 564.00 Birthday Sleepover 1,000.00 Volunteer Reception 500.00 Community Day T shirts 150.00 Receptions & Flowers 880.00 Approximate Total $33,137.00 CHIEF LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Ann Goodhart reported on the implementation of the new computer system and the Library's Internet web site. Ted Benson became supervisor of Technical Services and Julie Backer joined the staff. Technical Services were actively involved in planning their new space in the main building. The Library Board worked on their policy manual with staff helping on the Internet policy. The Library established new partnerships with the School District this year. Library and School staffs joined for a Multiculturalism training session and also worked together to start a Storytime for special needs children. The Foundation funded the new web site and a self-checkout unit. They also provided $10,000 for the purchase of popular books. The Library Staff continued to provide interesting and informative programs for the public. Adult Services hosted several authors' visits, the B.C. Millennium Project book signing and reception and a special reception to thank Dr. Azarm for his years of service. The Group Study Rooms, funded by the Friends, are completed and in constant use. This area has also helped reduce the noise level in the Fiction area. November 11th was the 50th Anniversary and the team of staff, volunteers, Foundation Board, Library Board and Friends filled the week of November 12 to 18 with events. There was a family sleepover, author visits, a memories contest, a bookmark contest, bagpipes, a harp, a blues band, puppet shows, face painting, balloons, awards, prizes and incredibly good chocolate mousse cake donated by Murchies' and served by the Friends. Almost 2500 people came to the party Saturday the 18th. It was truly a community celebration for the residents of West Vancouver.
