REMEMBRANCE DAY November 11, 2000 All went according to plan -just one small glitch with a faulty coffee urn which was eventually sorted out by Paul, who is a tower of strength on these occasions. We certainly had 600 plus visitors to the reception, many of whom enjoyed an impromptu sing-song with the excellent Dundarave Players orchestra from the Seniors Centre. The orchestra was better placed this year in the centre of the main floor. Everyone who worked that morning was fantastic. It is a very special occasion and I think we all enjoyed ourselves. I hope you were able to get to the Library's Birthday Party on the 18th of November. If not, you missed a wonderful time. It was a great joint effort by the Library Staff, Friends, Foundation Members, Volunteers, Board and Sponsors, under the direction of Anne Graves and Ann Good hart. The whole library was alive with people and activities. There was the very successful Friday night sleepover for staff, children and parents. On Saturday, the Sentinel Jazz Band played outside the library and the Celtic Harpist, Mike Absalom entertained us inside. Young volunteers were just about everywhere -making balloon animals, painting faces, helping make buttons, and even carrying dirty dishes! The Friends were downstairs running a successful mini book sale as well as upstairs serving the birthday cake, coffee and tea. Some of the Volunteers ran a small shop with some great gift items. There were the Author visits and readings, Harry Potter and a Puppet show. The Birthday ceremony got underway at 2:30 with the moving representation by the Legionnaires of those the Library was founded to honour. The master of ceremonies introduced the winners of the bookmark contest and all six young people got 50 of their own bookmark designs as well as a t-shirt with the same design on it and tickets to a Grizzlies' game. The Memories of the Library winners received books as their awards. Once the cake was cut by Councillor Allan Williams, everyone seemed to be busy socializing and drinking the tea and coffee. Our thanks to Murchie's for all their support. I think the founders of the West Vancouver Memorial Library would have been very proud to see what has happened in the 50 years it has been in existence. There was a great feeling of community during the party and that, after all, was what they were all about. I'm sure there were a lot of very tired staff on Sunday. Our thanks to them all for a wonderful celebration and a job well done.
