BOOK SALE 2000 June 16 - Friday Preview 6 to 8 p.m. June 17 - Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18 - Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The book sales organized and operated by the Friends of the Library have long been the "Star" feature of the Library's year. Not only have we provided a stimulus to our clients' reading, and to Library membership, it has also been a huge fund raising event. The last two years we've reached the $8,000 mark. The book sale offers a marvelous opportunity for many Friends to work together on the multitude of tasks involved in planning, preparation and operation. Through its high profile publicity, it has also proven a successful event in recruiting new Friends to our membership. Friday Evening Preview: Open for Members of the Friends ONLY, and not family members or friends who are not members of our Society. We are going to be very firm on this point since the Preview Night is a privilege for our Members who give so much to the Library during the year. No couples unless both are Members of the Friends. Entry strictly by current membership card. Memberships will be sold at the door. No children, other than paid up Youth Members. No doubt about it, due to the continuous book sale, the bulk of the labour-intensive sorting of books has been completed by our esteemed Friends -Wanda Osborne, Brendan Rowell, Elsa O'Connor, Betty Stevens, Joanna Scott, Karen Cowper, Sandra Wright and Ted Hill who have logged some 316 hours since September 1999. However, some refinement will be required as the boxes of sorted books are transferred to the shelves. Ted Hill continues to be our resident "Red Dot" authority. Betty O'Sullivan and Natalie Logan will be telephoning to schedule people for the sorting and for the sale itself. We now have permission to hang the banner over the Marine Drive overpass at Park Royal. It will be displayed from June 9th until June 18th, 2000. Natalie Logan is preparing the banner and having the dates on it changed while Patricia Treadwell will be looking after the hanging of the banner. Brendan Rowell is making the necessary arrangements for posters to be displayed in the West Vancouver blue buses. Several posters are already on display at the Library, more will be arranged nearer the time. Super Valu is considering our request for 400 large brown grocery bags for our Sunday sale. As the Vancouver IONS Community Group, Books to Africa Project, will not be taking our left over books this year, Barbara Drummond is actively researching other possibilities for their disposal.
