VOLUNTEERS SHINE The 2000 Volunteer Recognition Reception was held on Friday, April 7th. It was to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the WVML's Volunteer Program and 50 years of the Friends of the Library. It was indeed a night for celebration. There was delightful welcoming music by Catherin McLellan and her Jazz ensemble. The main hall of the Library was decorated with balloons, flowers and shining stars inscribed with the names of those in attendance. The long tables held wonderful hors d'oeuvres and cakes and there was tea, coffee and punch to drink. There were also door prizes given out. Anne Graves gave the welcoming speech and handed out the 2, 5 and 10-year Service Awards to the Volunteers. Jim Turpin, Chair of the Library Board spoke on their behalf while Brenda Stonnell did the same for the Library Foundation. Sophia Weremchuk gave a short history of the Friends of the Library. Congratulations to the long time Friends of the Library some of whom also received awards for long service as Library Volunteers. Bridget McDowall and Joanna Scott received 5-year Service Awards while 10-Year Service Awards were presented to Bee Barker and Beverly Oswald One of the evening's highlights was the video produced by Anne Graves entitled "Our Volunteers Shine". The video showed the Library's early beginnings and spanned the last 50 years. It depicted the talented and dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to help make the West Vancouver Memorial Library a Community Treasure! These include the Library Volunteers, Friends of the Library, Board of Directors, Memorial Library Foundation, Honorary Board of Advisors and the dedicated Staff. The choreography of pictures and music brought tears to the eyes. It was masterfully done and needs to be seen by all Friends and Volunteers. Indeed it was a night when we all did BOOK SALE 2000 Arrangements for this year's book sale are underway. It will take place as follows: Friend's preview -- Friday evening, June 16th Sale -- Saturday, June 17th Sunday, June 18th Many, many Friends will be required in the various "labour intensive" tasks that are required to ensure the event is again a big success. At our meeting in April we will be asking all Friends to give their time and expertise to this vital fundraising, high profile event. We especially look to Wanda Osborne and Brendan Rowell for their experience and expertise. Book sorting starts early in May and volunteers are needed. Friends are encouraged to drop in and assist with sorting whenever they have free time. Betty O'Sullivan and Natalie Logan, our telephone committee, will soon be calling to see if you can help.
