LIBRARY'S 50th ANNIVERSARY Our West Vancouver Memorial Library was opened on November 11th, 1950 and it was the official War Memorial to the memory of West Vancouver's fallen soldiers. The celebrations marking our 50th Anniversary will be held the week of November 11-18, 2000. The Library Staff, Foundation and Friends are working together to make this year and the celebration a memorable event. One of the projects for the celebration will be to exhibit old photos of Library events over the past 50 years. Pictures of The Friends appear to be in short supply, so if anyone has any photos or documents in their possession, please bring them in to Lillian in the Administration Office. Our 50th Anniversary is indeed a special occasion to celebrate, and with everyone's participation we will make it a memorable occasion. THE BRITISH COLUMBIA 2000 BOOK The B.C. 2000 Book is crafted of wood from throughout B.C., it has highlights of gold leaf and has special archival pages. It arrived at the West Vancouver Memorial Library on Friday March 3rd at 1:30 p.m. with much pomp and pageantry and was transported in a 1941 Packard driven by the owner, Bryon Briton. Mayor Ron Woods hosted the ceremony and oversaw the signing of the book. The first two signatures were by West Vancouverites, Trudy Thomas, age 97 and Aileen Slater, age 101, who live at Inglewood Lodge, and who are both avid Bookmobile patrons. Despite the heavy rain, over 100 guests were on hand to sign the Book. It was a delightful event with colourful B.C. 2000 balloons, live entertainment by Kay Young and Ken Gibson, a large cake by Amadeo Bakehouse that was decorated to look like the B.C. 2000 Book, and flowers by Marion Nodwell on the tables. Murchie's Gary Chalk provided the tea, coffee and china. Setting up and serving the refreshments was elegantly and efficiently carried out by the Friends. Marguerite Cassetta served tea from her beautiful silver tea service with Barbara Drummond assisting. Betty O'Sullivan looked after the coffee service and Natalie Logan had the honour of cutting the beautiful cake and did a superb job while Betty Stephen graciously served the cake. Giselle Black kept the kitchen running efficiently. Thank you, Angela Hogan, Special Events Coordinator for the West Vancouver District Parks & Recreation, for organizing and coordinating the ceremonies. The B.C. 2000 Book will travel throughout the province this year to more than 200 communities giving every one the chance to sign their name, and literally, make their mark in history. On January 1st, 2001 it will go on permanent display at the B.C. Museum in Victoria where a page will be turned each day to reveal the signatures. We encourage all Friends to sign the book. Pages of the book will be available for signature at the North Shore Credit Union, Park Royal South until December 31st. From the March 6th letter of thanks to the Friends from Angela Hogan -- "What started oat as a 'paper plate, paper cup ' event turned into a beautiful, elegant affair and this would not have been possible without the magical touch of the "Friends of the Library.
