COMPUTERIZATION The early December Library closing was to give staff training on the new computer system. Between the 20th and 23rd of December almost 70 staff members took their training. The Friends of the Library helped by providing pizza and T-shirts! There have been "Cyber Saturday" training sessions for patrons during January and early February. Look for more in the future. In her report to the AGM, Ann Goodhart said "1999 has been a watershed year for all of us at West Vancouver Memorial Library and we will enter the new millennium with the new technology to take us into the future. Thanks are due to the Board, the Foundation, The Friends and Council for their support in this project. But most of all, 1 would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Library who rose to the occasion so spectacularly. It was, according to Innovative, one of the tightest migration timelines ever attempted by a library. We did it and we did it with no major problems. On January 3rd we reopened with the new system up and working." Congratulations to all. ART GALLERY Elsa O'Connor and a small group of the Friends continue to host the monthly "opening night" receptions. Coffee and tea are served each time, with Bridget McDowall making the occasional bowl of punch in the summer. Receptions are usually held on the first Monday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and although the artist usually invites his or her guests, these receptions are open to everyone. The Children's & Teen Art Exhibitions "Millennium Masterpieces" featuring artwork from Grades K-6 and 7-11 were featured from Thursday January 6 to 23. It was indeed a colourful and exciting event. Due to some unforeseen difficulties the Tapestry and Drawings by Stanislaw P. Dusko was cancelled. From January 24 to February 20 we have been featuring the exciting work of photographer Richard Montagna. Mr. Montagna is a professional photographer specializing in location portraiture, weddings and art copywork. He is also a photographic educator, teaching workshops at the Ferry Building and leads photo tours to Alaska, China and other remote areas. In 1991, while teaching at Hefei Polytechnic University, Anhui Province, China, Mr. Montagna expected to capture the landscape of the country but he found his camera finding another focus. He hopes "this selection of images conveys some aspects of the culture and daily routines that were part of my experiences for the 2 years 1 lived in Hefei, and gives the viewer a small glimpse of life in the People's Republic of China." The next meeting of The Friends will be on Wednesday February 23, 2000 at 7 p.m. in the Library's Peters Meeting Room Editor - Mary Holland Printing & Circulation -Maureen Eagle Contributing Writers -Sophia Weremchuk Mary Holland Ted Hill
