("Treasures " continued from page 3) Finally in 1995, the Library was able to assign a large portion of it's generous new basement for the sorting of books and the actual sale - a splendid help for all those involved. These fine new quarters have spared us the many trials and tribulations we faced in earlier years, such as the time our book stocks were threatened by a leaky roof above us. The amounts from the sale over the years have risen steadily and have now topped $8000. Again, since the fifties, the Friends have traditionally provided hospitality at the Library's official and social functions providing and serving the refreshments. The Annual Remembrance Day reception held in the Library following the Armistice Day Ceremony and Parade is a community tradition unique to West Vancouver at which the Friends host between 600 and 700 people. This tradition started on Remembrance Day 1975 - the Library's 25th birthday and is an event in which we are particularly proud to be involved. We also serve tea, coffee or punch at the monthly artists' receptions and at special events such as the Language Laboratory Opening and the Bookmobile's 30th anniversary commemoration. We are looking forward to our involvement, with the entire Library family, of the 50 year celebrations next year. REMEMBRANCE DAY November 11 this year falls on a Thursday, and arrangements for the reception are well in hand. Effectively, these are as in previous years. Our volunteer coordinator - Betty O'Sullivan -will be telephoning Friends soon to ensure that all the bases are covered. Generally speaking, we have more volunteers than we have places! The Dundarave Players have kindly agreed to provide background music for the event. The Library's cabling is being upgraded in order to cope with the new computer system. Hopefully, therefore, we will run less risk of our urns blowing fuses at the crucial moment! CONTINUOUS BOOK SALE Wanda Osborne, Brendan Rowell and Sophia Weremchuk have been hard at work over the last few months sorting books for the new Continuous Book Sale which will commence in October. All hardbacks are $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. There are some absolute gems in the Sale, so do check the carts whenever you are in the Library. Many thanks to the above for all they have done to ensure that this endeavour - a joint project of the Friends, volunteers and staff, will get off to a cracking start. ART GALLERY During West Vancouver's Harmony Arts Festival week from August 6 to 15, a programme of events, arranged by the Library's Visual Art's Group, was held in the Peters Room. Representatives of the Friends assisted in this programme when they provided and served refreshments. Attendance was disappointing, but this is the first year for this activity and perhaps it will take off in future years. Our thanks for their kind assistance to: Maureen Eagle Wanda Osborne Elsa O'Connor Brendan Rowell Sophia Weremchuk Adjudication of works submitted by North Shore artists for exhibiting in 2000 will be held on Saturday, October 30. The Friends have offered to assist the Visual Arts Group with this busy day. We can look forward to three more exhibits in 1999. Again, sincere thanks to Elsa O'Connor for her hard, dedicated work to ensure that the artists' receptions run so smoothly. The next meeting of The Friends will be on Wednesday October 27, 1999 at 7 p.m, in the Library's Peters Meeting Room Editor - Mary Holland Printing & Circulation -Maureen Eagle Contributing Writers -Joanna Knight Ted Hill
