NEWSLETTER Issue 129 October 1999 MEMBERSHIP Welcome back after our summer recess. It was good to see so many Friends at our September meeting, ready for a good autumn session. Welcome to new Members joining us during the summer. Our total membership now stands at 173. Thelma Hamill Irene Hart Joanne Milne Micheline McComb A reminder that the Minutes of our meetings are not circulated but are summarized in our newsletter. Copies of the Minutes and our monthly Financial Reports are available at the Library's Administration Office weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Minutes are tabled at the following month's meeting for discussion and approval. The best way to find out about our Society is to attend our monthly meetings which are short, friendly and fairly informal. Members are encouraged to play an active roll in our Society. We do, however, respect the wishes of those Friends who prefer to be silent Members. FRIENDS' FUNDING First the bad news, then the good! In March of this year, the Friends made an application to the BC Charitable Gaming Funding Society for a grant in the amount of $27,339 - this being the cost of the proposed group study area on the Main Floor. We were told "Based on the financial documentation and information submitted with the application approved to receive $9,000" Now the good news. Friends will recall that, immediately following our December 1997 Casino, the Supreme Court froze all money owed by the government to charities at that time. This situation has at last been unscrambled and we have received our share of the Charity Trust Fund - being $22,986.36!! Needless to say, these two amounts affect one another, and the Commission feel that, together, "will be adequate gaming access for the 1999 fiscal period." In summary: Received in 1999 Direct Charitable Access $9,000.00 1997 Casino $22,986.36 Total 1999 Revenue $31,986.36 Total 1997 Casino Revenue: 1998 $33,587.23 1999 $22,986.36 $56,573.59 There is further good news on the revenue front. We have, again this year, received a donation from the Kiwanis Club of Capilano in the amount of $1000. The Chairman of the Library Board, Jack McConville, at our September meeting, requested a donation of $1000 to fund materials for staff training for the new computer system. As training has already commenced, the September meeting voted in agreement to this contribution straight away, rather than deferring for one month as is the usual practice.
