NEWSLETTER Issue 128 July 1999 ANNOUNCEMENT It is with sadness that we have to inform Friends of the death of one of our long serving Members, Pat Scrivener, on June 22, following a fall. Pat was a very sweet person, whose voice alone will be long remembered by many of us from the years that she headed up the telephone committee. Pat's wish was that donations in her memory may be made to the West Vancouver Memorial Library. MEMBERSHIP At our meeting on June 23, after much discussion over the last few months, it was decided to continue to hold our meetings on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. We do not meet during the summer, so our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 22. Members are asked to mark this date on their calendars now as we will not be issuing a further Newsletter before that meeting. Members are encouraged to play an active role in our Society. We do, however, respect the wishes of those Friends who prefer to be silent Members. Welcome to new Members who joined the Friends during June: Rosemary Arnett Beverley Atkinson Marti Barregar Melanie Brown Roberta Crosby Esther Da Rosalind Foucault Kimie Grass Pat Grass Richard Grass Silke Grass Tom Haines B. Hankin Bodil Heppner K. Kaan Russ Lindsay Owen Louis M. Meshgini Rose Perrett Patti Richardson David Roberts Ali Yasdan The best way to find out about our Society is to attend our monthly meetings which are short, friendly and fairly informal. Minutes are not circulated. A summary of the proceedings is contained in our monthly Newsletter mailed to all Members. FRIENDS' FUNDING The picture book area in Youth Services was completed during June when the sign was installed. It really does look good and impossible to miss! It is expected that picture book circulation will skyrocket as happy young readers see "the writing on the wall"! Do take time to see this area. We will receive the Library's invoice for this project soon which is expected to be well within the agreed amount of $6,780. A poster acknowledging the Friends' contribution will be on display for a few months. The theme of this year's Summer Reading Club is "A World of Reading". Sign-up commenced on June 14. Club Members receive a package including a reading passport and a bookmark. The Friends have provided $317 in support of these and other incentive items. In view of the fact that there will be many activities and a possible special appeal next year as part of the Library's fiftieth birthday celebration, it has been decided that the Friends will not explore any new fundraising event ideas at this time.
