FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES The Treasurer's May report was presented in a slightly revised format to show our funds on hand after the deduction of our committed expenses. This amount is $5,600. The President asked the May meeting to give consideration over the next month to the suggestion that the Friends investigate the feasibility of holding a "black tie bingo" evening during the winter months. This would be a fundraising event, with buffet supper, attended by some 200250 people. Should the Friends vote, at our June 23 meeting, in favour of taking this idea one step further, the President and Vice President will, through the summer, study the logistics, risks and potential income of holding such an event. The matter would then be voted upon by the meeting during the Fall. Should any Friends who will not be attending out June 23 meeting have any views on this topic, perhaps they would be kind enough to contact Joanna Knight. ART GALLERY The "Summer Show" presented by the West Vancouver Sketch Club, which is running from June 7 to July 3, is proving very popular. It is an eclectic collection of the newest juried works of forty club members demonstrating a wide variety of techniques, media and imagination. The Sketch club was founded in 1947. Interest quickly grew and the Club was incorporated with the stated objectives of "Promoting greater interest in, and appreciation of, fine art, and to encourage local talent". Although exhibitions of Club members' works are held regularly at Park Royal and the Municipal Galleries, this is the first time one has been held in the Library's Art Gallery. We are indeed fortunate to have so much artistic talent in our community. Thanks again to Elsa O'Connor and her team for all their work to ensure that the artists' receptions run smoothly. MISCELLANY Council has passed the Library's budget with no reductions. In addition, they made provision for landscaping; a part-time computer technician; and money to repaint the interior of the building. Some rearrangement is being carried out in Adult Services in the Main Hall. The CD bins are being moved down in the Hall so that it opens it up visually instead of the tall paperback carousels. However, the lighting in this area is not as good. The Chief Librarian would appreciate receiving Friends' comments on this project. The Bookmobile, decorated in gold bows, participated in the Community Day Parade on June 5 as part of the service's thirtieth anniversary celebrations. The next meeting of The Friends will be on Wednesday June 23, 1999 at 7 p.m. in the Library's Peters Meeting Room Editor - Mary Holland Printing & Circulation Maureen Eagle Contributing Writers Joanna Knight Ted Hill
