Treasures of our Memorial Library ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY Among the more esoteric treasures donated to our library by the Friends of the Library is a ten-volume set of books entitled, "ROUTLEDGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY" The donation was made in 1998. Although these volumes have not been frequently used, so far, they are nevertheless a rare and valuable "reference source". The cost of the set was $3869.00 (the prepublication price), completely donated by "The Friends". Naturally, they are shelved in the Reference Section, but may be freely consulted there. This encyclopedic work is a first edition, published by Routledge, in Cornwall, in 1998, so it is decidedly "au courant", The editor was Edward Craig. These volumes have the look and feel of quality. Their covers are pleasing shades of red and blue. Their paper is of archival quality, i.e., acid-free. Each volume of text runs to about 870 pages. The text is obviously designed to appeal mainly to serious scholars of philosophy, but any casual reader who will spend even a few minutes browsing through a volume or two cannot fail to be impressed by the scope and depth of the work. Of course, there will be found exhaustive material about famous philosophers such as Descartes, Luther and Confucius, but also a great deal of rare material from philosophers less well known, such as Muhammad (sic) and many of more localized renown, from national or regional schools. Material such as this endows a library with great prestige, and serves academics with precious knowledge and guidance. Incidentally the tenth volume of the set is comprised of only the Index. In view of the rather "rarified" nature of the treasure stored in these volumes, it seems very fitting that the very next volume on the shelf is an extensive dictionary of Philosophy.
