Application for Direct Charitable Access to Gaming Revenue Our Treasurer, on telephoning the BC Gaming Commission in Victoria to check on the progress of our application, was told that it was being processed. A formal request was made to the Board that the proposed new group study area on the Main Floor, to be funded by the Friends, through this grant, be designated as a memorial to Tony Scammell. At their meeting on May 18, the Board "moved to approve the recognition for the group study area and to authorize signage to be developed working with (the Chief Librarian)". In addition, because of Tony Scammell's exceptional contributions to the Friends and the Library, they agreed to our request that it be a memorial to him. Computerization At our May meeting the Chief Librarian informed us that, of the two finalists for the design and installation of the computer system, Innovative Interfaces had been recommended by staff to the Board. Negotiations with this company are under way and, once complete, the Board will ask Council to approve their selection. The process of "migrating" to the new system will then begin. As Ann Goodhart says "It will be a very hectic schedule as there is a lot to be done before January 1, 2000". Ann assured us that, although the system can be accessed through the Internet, everything we can now do from home we will continue to be able to do. In addition, we will also be able to renew and reserve books from home by both telephone and computer. It was interesting to hear the comments from two members of the Friends who attended the public demonstrations by the two finalists on May 10 and 18, Michael Dyck and Mary Holland. The new computer room on level 1R is virtually complete. Initially, there will be six computer stations, each with two chairs, so that twelve people at a time can receive training. Summer Reading Club Ann Goodhart told our May meeting "Planning is well underway for summer reading. There will be a range of exciting programmes including mask making, stories and games from around the world. There will also be a teen summer reading club again this year. It was a tremendous success last year (when) about 150 teens signed (who) read and reported on an astounding 1,400 books. " For every book that the teen students read and report on to the Librarians, they earn points towards incentive prizes that have been donated by local merchants. Ann showed the meeting the general design for the graphics for this year's summer reading, together with the poster, T-shirt, book mark, 'fridge magnet and the reading passport. This latter includes a map of the world on which the children can indicate countries about which they have read. The theme is "Multiculturalism - Around the World". The Friends' have donated just under $320 to fund these incentive items.
