Friends' Funding At our April meeting, the Friends approved funding again this year of the incentive items for the Youth Summer Reading Club, up to a limit of $350. This covers "rewards" such as T-shirts, bookmarks, fridge magnets, etc. The new Picture Book area in Youth Services is complete with the exception of signage. The Friends are ready to present our cheque for $6,780 for this project. I am sure that those of you who have visited will agree that it is a much improved, delightful space. The purchase of some additional 60 - 70 CD-ROM's for the Youth Services circulating collection is proceeding. The Friends approved the expenditure of $3,000 for this project at our March 24 meeting. Memorial to Tony Scammell The Library has ordered the book "The Literary Guide and Companion to Middle England". The Library's book plate will be affixed reading "In Memory of Tony Scammell - Friend to the Library". A letter will be sent to Tony's family advising them of this tribute. Art Gallery The exhibits in the Art Gallery this year have been most interesting and enjoyable. The current display by Lisa Klepak entitled "Of Light and Reason" is quite dramatic! At Lisa's reception earlier this month, the Friends served tea and punch as a change from coffee. Thanks once again to Elsa O'Connor for all that you do to ensure these receptions are successful. Next month from June 7 to July 3, for the first time in our Gallery, we have an exhibition by the West Vancouver Sketch Club. Entitled "Summer Show" it is a representative sample of 170 members' work demonstrating the wide variation of techniques, media and imagination. The artists will be in attendance at the opening reception, so you are going to need some help on this one, Elsa! Computerisation The computer project is progressing on schedule. A new Library publication is to be issued every few weeks to keep us up to date on events. Called "Computer Times" it will be available from the Check-Out desk. The computer room on the 1R level is now built and just awaiting furnishing. Once staff have been fully trained, it will be available for public training sessions. It would be interesting to hear comments from any members of the Friends who attended the public demonstrations by the two submission finalists on May 10 and May 18. The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wednesday May 26, 1999 at 7 p.m. in the Library's Peters Meeting Room Editor - Mary Holland Printing & Circulation -Maureen Eagle Contributing Writers -Joanna Knight Ted Hill
