Friends' Hospitality Funding The Bookmobile celebrates 30 years of Service! April marked the 30th anniversary of the Memorial Library's service to the community. During the weeks leading up to the formal celebration on April 26th, the Bookmobile team photographed visiting patrons; and started a visitor's book for comments. These together with children's drawings depicting the vehicle, have been on display in the Gallery. In the early years, the Bookmobile mainly visited schools, but slowly the focus changed. Now, in addition to extended stops from the western to eastern municipal boundaries, it visits all Senior Care Facilities. The birthday party itself, on Monday, April 26, was a very successful occasion for which the Friends provided the catering. Invitations, hand addressed by Betty O'Sullivan and Wayne Leigh-Spencer, were mailed to bookmobile and home delivery patrons; to members of the Library family; representatives from City Hall and to all care homes in West Vancouver. The first guest to arrive was our MLA (!) followed shortly thereafter by three Councillors. Inglewood Lodge and Capilano Care Centre arranged transport for our valued guests. The Mayor and Board Chair, Jack McConville, jointly blew out the candles of the birthday cake. Friends who attended were privileged to see and enjoy the wonderful relationship between our dedicated librarians and those they visit. Many who attended were elderly and it was rewarding to witness how alert and charming they all were. Two of our guests were 98, and another 99. How literature transcends the generations and gives pleasure to us all! Cheryl McGregor and her staff put a tremendous amount of successful, cheerful effort into arranging the event and those leading up to it. Cheryl paid tribute to the bookmobile drivers over the years - Miriam Sherman, Robyn Willis, Anthea Goffe, Pam Douglas, Daphne Grisdale, Lauren Henderson and Diana Kemble. Special mention was made of Lucille Fisher, whose death in 1983 so saddened not only the Library but also the community. Hats off again and many thanks to Natalie Logan, Betty Stephen and Marguerite Cassetta. To cater a silver tea party at home, or for twenty or so like minded people in the Musto Room, is one thing, but to arrange such an elegant reception for an unknown number of anywhere from 50 to 150 of mainly elderly people is downright brave! Needless to say, they carried it off efficiently, calmly and elegantly. Sophia Weremchuk and Bridget McDowall made and served the punch and were charming and lively hosts, as were Betty O'Sullivan, Joanna Scott and Eileen de Bues. Barbara Cupit supplied two lovely flower arrangements from her garden. "Ken Gibson and Friends", two members of the Dundarave Orchestra, generously provided happy, lively music. Punch Bowls The two punch bowls we undertook to find and purchase for the Library are now ready for our summer events, and have already been used twice -at the Bookmobile party and at this month's artist's reception. They are very attractive and have been much admired. Thank you to Sophia Weremchuk who spared no effort in tracking these down which involved driving many kilometers. Marie Moscovitch has very generously sponsored the cost of the punch bowls.
