Newsletter Issue 125 April 1999 Membership Welcome to two new Members who joined during March: Bridget McDawell T.H. Reid Our membership now totals 172. Bridget, a familiar face to many of us, is Chair of the Library's Visual Arts Committee and thus responsible for the Art Gallery. She is very enthusiastic in this role and it is due to the respect that she has for the Friends through our participation in the monthly artists' receptions and in other ways that Bridget decided to join our group. Thank you to everyone who completed the questionnaire in regard to the change of time/date of our monthly meetings to avoid a conflict with those of the Historical Society. Unfortunately the result was inconclusive -except that we concluded that a daytime meeting was not realistic, most people being busy with other activities during the day. We will, however, revisit this question, possibly changing the day of the meeting or bringing the time forward, to say, 5 p.m. Book Sale JUNE 18 - Preview 6-8 p.m. JUNE 19 - 8.30 a.m. - 4 p.m. JUNE 20 - 10.00 a.m. - 4 p.m. Work is progressing on this important annual event. Congratulations to Betty Stephen on already achieving written permission from the Municipality for the installation of our banner on the Marine Drive pedestrian overpass from June 11 to 21. Natalie Logan is arranging for the necessary alterations to the banner to reflect this year's times and dates. Beverly Oswald has consented to undertake the publicity for the event this year, and Barbara Drummond has agreed to take on the role of approaching charitable and other organizations to take left-over books, and to arrange their collection/delivery after the sale. Betty O'Sullivan has willingly accepted the role of Volunteer Coordinator. Wanda Osborne and Brendan Rowell are providing tremendous hands-on support and advice. So we have a lot of the groundwork laid, but the important part is, of course, so many Friends' dedication and hard work sorting and at the sale itself. Memorial to Tony Scammell Members have been considering during the past month or so a suitable Library memorial to the life and work of Past President -and Friend extraordinare - Tony Scammell who died in February. Our meeting on March 24 decided, after much thought, that in the event our application to the Gaming Commission is successful the resultant group study area funded by the Friends would be an appropriate memorial. Our President is writing to the Chairman of the Library Board for his approval. If, of course, the Gaming Commission's decision precludes the funding of this project, then we will address other ideas. The Library is purchasing some literature materials in memory of Tony about which we will be receiving information. Our recognitions group will then look for the best way in which we can make sure Tony is remembered.
