Treasures of our Memorial Library A Tribute to Tony Scammell It was a shock to all who knew him to learn of Tony's death last month. He was such a very special friend of the Library and to the community of West Vancouver - a pillar of our society. He will be long remembered. A Captain in the Second World War, Tony was sent on missions for the British Intelligence Service to French Indo China. Burma. India and the Far East. One of his duties was seeking out the war-dead and the supervision of Church burial services for fallen Comrades-in-Arms. On completion of his studies and having obtained an Agriculture Degree from Cambridge, Tony emmigrated to Canada in 1953. aiming first in Calgary. He later moved to the city he would learn to love so much -Vancouver - in the employment of the Duke of Grosvenor. At this time, he also served in the Militia. But England called him back where at last he fulfilled an ambition to work with his degree - with the Ministry of Agriculture. However, he could not forget Canada and he returned in 1972, first to Richmond and then to West Vancouver. In 1976, Tony became an active member of St. Stephen's Church. He was a member of the Church and Parish Councils and the Altar Guild. He was a Reader and Verger. Books and literature were a great part of Tony's life. Shopping expeditions would begin with a visit to the booksellers, and he was always ready to provide a reading to the various groups with which he was associated. He became actively involved with the library, energetically working for and promoting the building of the Library's extension. An enthusiastic member of the Friends for more than fifteen years. Tony was responsible for the impressive endeavour required to have our Society incorporated under the Province's Society Act. Indeed, it was his idea! This meant that we were now a registered charity and eligible to participate in various government programmes favouring charities. Tony wrote our Friends' newsletter for many years, only ceasing to do so when he returned to England again in July 1996. We were genuinely delighted when Tony came back to West Vancouver last year. He, in turn, was so pleased when he was warmly and enthusiastically received on his unexpected arrival at one of our meetings last Fall. It was good that Tony was back among friends for his final months. The last time we were to see him. just one month before his death, was at the Opening of the Language Learning Lab. - an event which he thoroughly enjoyed (see photo). His pleasure at being able to be present at last year's Remembrance Day Ceremony and Reception was evident. Perhaps this day was a final coming together of the elements of life that were so important to Tony -service for one's country, the Church, friendship, community, tradition, books and literature. Tony is valued for his friendship; his innate kindness: his mischievous sense of humour: the passion he brought to everything he undertook. Above all. he was a gentle man. Our thanks to The Reverend Keith Gilbert. Rector of St. Stephen's Church, for his kind assistance in compiling this Tribute to Tony.
