ANNOUNCEMENT It is with great sorrow that we inform Friends that Pat Lucas, a member of the Friends and the wife of our Treasurer, Ron, died suddenly at home on November 11. Throughout her life she enjoyed family, community and social activities. A remarkable woman who brought out the best in everyone with her cheerful and optimistic disposition. Family and friends are invited to gather to remember her on Saturday, November 21, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Seastrand Lounge. 150 - 24lh Street in West Vancouver. FRIENDS' FUNDING 1) Youth Services Department A vote was taken at our October meeting on the proposal to enhance and expand the Picture Book Area in the Youth Services Department. This proposal was first put to our September meeting and described in last month's Newsletter. The proposal was agreed in the total amount of $6,780 as follows: a) Expand area: add/replace & relocate shelving $3,080 b) Paint east wall of Department & add 3-D lettering $1,200 c) Add neon highlights to lettering $1,000 d) Purchase of table & 4 chairs $1,500 The Friends did not feel able to agree to fund staff time for the necessary book rearrangement. 2) Language Learning Centre The Language Learning Centre, funded by the Friends through our latest casino, is nearing completion. This facility represents a major contribution by the Friends, and will be called "The Friends of the Library Language Centre." Our meeting agreed that a formal opening ceremony should be arranged to which should be invited all members of the Friends, everyone who worked on the December 1997 casino, Ann Goodhart, Cheryl McGregor and any other members of staff as designated by Ann. Following the ceremony itself, a tea party will be held in the Musto Room. Natalie Logan, assisted by Marguerite Cassetta, has kindly agreed to organize this event. 3) Summer Reading Club The final incentive prizes have now been awarded to the winners in the different categories of this reading programme, and Julia Hedley, Head of Youth Services, is most grateful for our support in this regard. 4) Inner Courtyard Two donor recognition brass plaques are being produced to mark our contribution to the renovated courtyard which will be affixed to the centre of the two tables. The wording is "In Honour of Kay Meek _ The Friends of the West Vancouver Memorial Library." 5) Bulletin Board The signage for the bulletin board has now been approved, and the board should be in place soon. 6) Casino Our next application for a casino has been contingent on the Library's space planning study as it was thought that perhaps our application should be for quiet study areas. This portion of the study should be completed by the end of the year, so we will be preparing our application in January.
