Treasures of our Memorial Library In 1977, Mrs. Kay Meek gave generously to our Library which helped the planners of the great extension a few years ago reach their goals. Her gift allowed for the provision of a garden patio - the Inner Courtyard - which bears her name. Over the years, this quiet retreat has brought pleasure to innumerable patrons. She has again come to the rescue of this delightful area with a most generous gift for its refurbishment. Most of the plantings in the original garden did not realty flourish. Last year, a decision was taken to carry out a major renovation of the area. Designer Karen Kristens en was commissioned to draw a plan to make the Courtyard a more attractive and useful sanctuary. Under her direction, the flower beds were deepened, and many of the original plants were set in more firmly. Some older plants were removed, and new flowers and small trees added. The Friends of the Library made a sizeable donation for the supply of sturdy, custom-made furniture: two cedar tables, a bench and four large armchairs. The Library Foundation provided the funding for the attractive new paving tiles. The list of plants now gracing this area is impressive - thirty-two different varieties! They range from yew trees to roses, Mexican orange blossoms, ferns, and Irish moss The Courtyard is now well equipped for patrons who want to spread their books; to read and write in peace; or just to relax and enjoy the ambience of the garden. It is a delight not only for bibliophiles, but also for garden lovers. We extend our grateful thanks to Kay Meek for her generosity in making this possible.
