Newsletter Issue 120 October, 1998 Membership Welcome to new Members who joined the Friends this summer: Li-Ying Kao Miriam Olney Our membership now stands at 172. All members are invited to attend our monthly meetings which are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month - the next being on October 28. These meetings are short, friendly and fairly informal. Minutes of the meetings are not circulated to Members as the proceedings are summarised in this newsletter. However, copies of the Minutes - together with copies of the Treasurer's Report are available from the Library's Administration Office weekdays between 10 am and 4 pm. The minutes are distributed at the following month's meeting for discussion and approval. Friends' Funding Inner Courtyard The redwood cedar benches and chairs purchased by the Friends for the refurbished Inner Courtyard were delivered in time for the official opening on July 29, performed by Mrs. Kay Meek. To quote from Denny Boyd's interesting article in The Vancouver Sun this August: The floor is made of flagstones. There is a tall dogwood tree, a camellia bush, a variety of shrubs and a riot of perennials in wooden tubs. There are heavy cedar tables and chairs where one might see a senior citizen reading Keats and a young student working on a laptop. They might say hello to each other, right out loud, with no fear of being shushed. Many of the Friends have enjoyed the Courtyard through this wonderful summer, and we thank those who have made it possible. Friends' recognition plaques for the furniture are being produced. Donation from the Kiwanis The Kiwanis Club of Capilano generously allocated the sum of $1,000 from their February two day Casino to help fund the development and delivery of audio books to the hearing and sight impaired of the North Shore. Their representative, Dudley Taylor, contacted our President, Joanna Knight, to arrange delivery of the cheque and and collection of our official receipt. What ensued is probably best described in Dudley's article in this month's Kiwanis' newsletter: Well, what a surprise! Joanna had her whole committee there to greet me. There was Ted Hill,VP(sic) Marie Evans. Secretary, the Library's Chief librarian. Ann Goodhart. and the Taped Books Coordinator. Emily Courtright. I was completely overwhelmed by the gratitude shown by this group I have never experienced such appreciation and warmth as I did on this occasion. Ann Goodhart will be sending a letter to all fellow Inter Link Libraries to advise how these funds have been spent.
