-Liaison At our April meeting, the Friends agreed to fund the purchase of a bulletin board - a medium through which the various members of our Library s family can share information about our activities. It will be located on the main floor across from the donor board. The Manager of Volunteer Services has offered to maintain the bulletin board and ensure that all our organizations are represented. The board should be in place soon. The Library's Art Gallery Committee collaborated with the Ferry Building Gallery in regard to the two young people's art exhibitions held in April and May. The Exhibitions Coordinator from the Gallery wrote to our Art Committee member Bridget McDowell: "Please also extend a thank you to all the Friends of the Library who assist with the receptions, and to the staff and volunteers who make these events happen" In sending us a copy of the letter, Bridget added the note: " Just to prove how special the Friends of the Library are, and once again thanks to you all" On behalf of the Friends, thank you very much Elsa O'Connor for all that you do to make these receptions such smoothly run successes. The Library Foundation is holding its second annual fundraising croquet tournament on September 19. This proved to be very popular, successful and great fun last year, and we wish them the best of luck and sunny weather. An event of this scope always needs volunteers, and if anyone would like to help with the multitude of tasks - setting up on the afternoon of Friday, September 18; registration and hosting on the Saturday, and so -forth, please contact Joanna Knight at 925 8644. It promises to be a most enjoyable day. Memorial Library Art Gallery The Library Art Committee's schedule for upcoming exhibitions through the summer promises to be very interesting. Showing now until August 1 is the work of three very different photographers: Barbara Worth, whose display of photograms is entitled "Wallflowers", has been creating striking and surprising photo based and sculptural artworks for over fifteen years. Heather Fisher who has a knack for recording the simplicity and power of nature has entitled her photographic display "Portraits of the Earth": Negar Majzub with "Visions" believes that "photographs are interrupted narratives of a moment in time" Next month's display - from August 4 to 29 - Lily Ha has the intriguing title "Excerpts from my Journal." This theme is continued in September with oil and watercolour by Niels Petersen - "Serenery: Touring the Familiar." Summer Recess The Friends will not meet formally again until September 23. However, events will proceed. An Executive Committee meeting has been called for mid July; we will hold a book sale review session; and hope to be in a position to call the initial meeting of the proposed On-Going Book Sale working group. Any urgent business or requests from the Chief Librarian will be addressed initially by the Executive Committee, and members will be telephoned as necessary. If any member has any concerns or queries during the break, please do not hesitate to call one of the Committee: President - Joanna Knight 925 8644 Vice President - Ted Hill 922 6711 Treasurer - Ron Lucas 922 7928 Secretary - Marie Evans 926 5915 The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wednesday September 23 1998 at 7 pm in the Library's Peters Meeting Room Joanna Knight Ted Hill Maureen Eagle We wish all Members of the Friends a very pleasant summer.
