Newsletter Issue 119 July 1998 Announcement It is with great sorrow that we inform Friends that long time, active member Betty Neilson died peacefully on Friday, July 10, at Lions Gate Hospital, surrounded by family. Betty was an avid Member of the Friends, participating in all our events and attending virtually every meeting. Her sage advice, coupled with her experience in Librarianship, was highly valued. Amongst many other contributions to our organization, she was instrumental in revising and producing out newsletter. Betty made many fine friends through our group. Her Cremation is to be private. A Memorial Service will be held in Fort Saskatchewan. When filling out the application or annual renewal form, Friends are asked to indicate the activities in which they are interested. This information is collated, and Members contacted when a need/opportunity arises in their area of interest. The best way to find out more about our society is to attend our monthly meetings which are short, friendly and fairly informal - held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. We have recessed for the summer now, and will not meet again until September 23, but do mark your calendar with that date when we look forward to welcoming all Members. We respect the wish of those Friends who prefer to be Silent Members. Book Sale 1998 We did it!! For the second year running we have broken through the $8,000 barrier and raised: $8,044.40. Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to make this important event such a success: Those who spent long tiring days sorting books - a total of over 30,000 books sorted over more than 250 "people hours". All our dedicated members who sent many, many hours on planning; preparation; coordinating volunteers; counting cash and banking; and so many other tasks. Everyone who worked so cheerfully and efficiently during the Sale itself. To attempt to list all these wonderful people would require an entire Newsletter in itself, but - you know who you are - and should, at the very least, give yourselves a round of applause. On behalf of the Friends of the Library - and the Library - thank you very, very much indeed. One person, however, has to be thanked and congratulated by name - Wanda Osborne, our Book Sale Convener. Wanda planned and anticipated every aspect of the event. She ensured that Everyone involved was aware of and comfortable with their responsibilities. She gave her attention to every facet of the planning and execution of the event - and seemed to be in all places at all times. Most people would probably have collapsed in exhaustion at the conclusion of the Sale itself - but no, Wanda was out at 7 am on the Monday morning after the sale taking down the banner from Marine Drive. She was then off to the Library to meet with the film crew who wished to buy books "by the yard" to use in a film set. She then packed up the unsold items for distribution to needy organisations. Wanda, on behalf of us all Thank You.
