Summer Reading Programme The annual province-wide Summer Reading Club for children, designed to encourage a love of books and reading and to maintain reading skills over the long summer months, was developed jointly by the Library Services Branch and the British Columbia Library Association back in 1990. Available throughout the whole province, the Club has benefited from input by our own Youth Department staff who have been key members of the organizing committee for the past three years. The committee works hard to come up with a theme and guides the artist (this year picture book artist Dean Griffiths)through the production of innovative and exciting materials for our young readers. This year's theme is "Wild about Books." The graphics are wonderful - featuring a desert island castaway and wild but very friendly animals. The incentive materials are gorgeous. Drop in to the Youth Department to see the poster and the brochure and bookmark that each registered member of the 1998 Club will receive. The Friends have donated funds for 3 of the prizes: frisbees, temporary tattoos and T-shirts. The desert island aspect of the Club puts one in mind of the BBC radio programme which -believe it or not - has been going since 1946. Celebrity guests are invited to choose and discuss the five or so books and records that they would take with them if they were stranded forever on a desert island (nice to have notice of that question!). Many, of course, chose the Bible and good old Bill Shakespeare. I think I would also choose Palgrave's "Golden Treasury." But "a chacun son gout!". Would members perhaps like to share their choice of reading material for a desert life on a remote island?
