Book Sale June is, of course, the month of one of the two major events of the Friends' year - our book sale. These sales have been held every year since 1982 and are immensely popular with both ourselves and the public. They offer a marvellous opportunity for many of us to work together on the multitude of tasks involved in planning, preparation and operation. Last year, we were able to raise over $8,000 for our Library. The sale is of books which have both been donated to the library over the years and those which the Library have had to discard. Books have to be discarded for a number of reasons - there may be a new edition or a newer book on the topic - it might be worn or be an item which has not circulated in some time. All libraries exercise this same process - however, not all are fortunate enough to have an organization such as ourselves to transform this into a very positive opportunity. Positive on two fronts - our sale raises funds for our very special Library and offers a rare chance for book lovers to turn over their own collections and to, perhaps, find that long sought after gem. One only has to look at the long line up of eager patrons from early morning before our 8.30 am Saturday opening to realise how much this is appreciated. However, it does involve a tremendous amount of work and organisation. Every one of those books has to be sorted through and placed on its appropriate shelf so that it can be readily identified. The logistics of running an event of this nature are complex and do not come without responsibility and effort. It is difficult to adequately express, on behalf of the Friends, our gratitude and respect to those members of our organization who have worked so long and tirelessly on the preparation of putting this event together. Also, of course, next weekend is going to require a lot of hard work and dedication. There are a great many of our members who have worked so hard already - and have performed an excellent job - but one now should be thanked and admired for her cheerful acceptance of responsibility, her courage and sheer hard work -Wanda Osborne. Good luck Wanda, we will all do our best to make this the most successful book sale yet. Friday evening is our family evening - Friday, June 19 from 6pm to 8pm. A special time for us to enjoy the fruits of our labours! Members of the Friends only allowed! Finances At our meeting on May 27 we were able to approve the expenditure of $326.30 for this year's Children's Reading Club. This amount covers the costs of book marks, reading lists and other incentives for children to spend some time over their summer recess in reading. Chief Librarian Ann Goodhart at our meeting showed us proposed plans for the revised design of the Library's inner courtyard. This is a most attractive part of the Library, but the much reduced funds of the Library must be spent on our staff and books! However, we are very fortunate in that Kay Meek who expended so much time and effort creating the lovely courtyard has come to our rescue once again - thank you, Kay. The courtyard is a beautiful, tranquil place in which to sit and read on a summer's day. The Friends have been requested to fund red wood cedar benches and a table and chairs for the courtyard in the amount of $3,400. A formal decision will be taken at our meeting on June 24, and this is certainly the kind of project with which we would like to be associated and a facility we would like to provide. What could be nicer than sitting out on a summer's day or evening and reading a book? Let's go for it!
