Book Sale June 19-6pm to 8pm preview June 20 - 8.30am to 4pm June 21 - 8.30am to 4pm Wanda Osborne, Organizer of this year's Sale, reports: Banner Permission has not yet been granted for the banner to be hung over the bridge over Marine Drive at Park Royal. Although we have been able to display our 30ft banner - specially made for this purpose - for the past 5 years and, indeed, were amongst the first organizations to do so, the municipality is now receiving so many requests that they have to be selective. Betty Stephen's formal request will be submitted to Council on May 25. Natalie Logan is preparing the banner and having the dates changed. Posters Brendan Rowell is making the necessary arrangements for posters to be displayed in the West Vancouver blue buses. Posters for display at the Library will be arranged nearer the time. Book Sorting Book sorting is due to start on May 19. Betty O'Sullivan will contact and coordinate volunteers. There is a huge amount of sorting to be carried out, so please volunteer your time whenever possible. Donated books should be taken down to the basement & put on shelves. Publicity Wanda and Carmina Davila will start the publicity campaign Logistics Wanda and Paul Windsor-Martin are working together on arrangements for the book sorting area. Nearer the time, we will be devising arrangements for door control, roped off areas, directional "footsteps", and so on. This year, due to Friday evening closure, the Library will be closed to the public on preview evening, and it may well be that members will be required to use the rear entrance. However, the entrance to be used will be clearly indicated. Please do remember to bring your Friends' membership card with you to show to the volunteers at the doors. The Library will, of course, be closed on the Sunday, and arrangements for that day will be the same as last year. Please telephone Betty O'Sullivan to discuss duties and times - 922 6271 Friends' Brochure The six panel brochure describing the activities of the Friends and containing an Application Form is being revised and reprinted in time to be available at the Book Sale. It was agreed to retain the logo - two hands holding an open book -currently on the front panel. This logo was adopted by the Library at the start of the fundraising campaign for the expansion, and was chosen from among entries submitted by students of the Emily Carr College of Art. (see front page) On-Going Book Sale At our April Meeting the decision was taken to set up a Working Group to study the feasibility and logistics of running an on-going sale of discarded books. Represented on this Group will be: The Friends responsible for the overall running of the sale and book sorting; Library Volunteers responsible for stocking and tidying the shelves; Library Staff responsible for book discards and receiving payment The Group will be co-chaired by Chief Librarian, Ann Goodhart, and Friends' President, Joanna Knight. Barbara Drummond, Wanda Osbome and Brendan Rowell have agreed to join the Group which will be convened early in the Fall. Ann Goodhart emphasised the following points: ♦ The year round on-going sorting of discarded books will alleviate the vast amount of work to be carried out in the 6 weeks before the annual sale; ♦ The Richmond Public Library, whose on-going sale she has studied, are of the opinion that the results of their annual sale are not adversely affected.
