Newsletter Issue 116 April 1998 Membership Welcome to new members joining the Friends in March: Caitlin Blewett Pat Connochie Judith Osborne Our membership now stands at a record high of 139. It is very encouraging, too, that so many members are now attending our monthly meetings. These are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month - at 7pm - and are open to all members. They are relatively informal and are intended as a forum both to explore ways in which we can assist our library and to discuss how our organization can best be run for the benefit of our members. The Minutes of our meetings are not circulated, but are summarised in this newsletter. Copies of the minutes, together with financial statements, may be obtained from the Library's Administration Office weekdays between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Liaison Meetings of the Library's Volunteer Services Advisory Committee are held quarterly, at which, along with all members of the library family, the Friends are represented. At the February meeting it was suggested that a bulletin board be constructed - to be housed in a prominent position - on which could be displayed information from the different groups - Staff, Board, Foundation, Volunteers and Friends. It was suggested that the Friends could perhaps provide funding for this board, and a formal proposal on this will be brought to our April meeting. Municipal Council On March 26 last, a public meeting was held at Municipal Hall at which comments on "the priorities which should be given to services and capital facilities provided by the municipality" could be heard. This meeting was attended by Chief Librarian, AnnGoodhart; Board Chairman Jack McConville; Board Members Barbara Cupit, Joan Creighton, and Juanita Tupper; and Friends' President Joanna Knight. Jack McConville and Joanna Knight gave both written and verbal presentations. Copies of these presentations are attached to our formal minutes . Book Sale Our annual Book Sale will be held this year on Saturday, June 20 and Sunday 21, with the preview - open to members of the Friends only - on the evening of Friday June 19. We are fortunate in that Wanda Osborne has again kindly volunteered to head up the organizing committee for this important event. Several volunteers have already committed their time - Carmina Davila will coordinate public relations for the event; and Ron Lucas and Aldo Benzan will look after the cash. Betty O'Sullivan, Coordinator of our telephone committee, will be in touch with all active members in due course to schedule participation. However, if you are able to book your time now, please do give Betty a call at: 922 6271 Ongoing Book Sale Following our request - at the Chief Librarian's suggestion last month - Ann Goodhart and Anne Graves have kindly followed up on their investigation of the Ongoing Book Sale held at Richmond Public Library. A description of this was tabled at our meeting. A motion as to whether or not to run an ongoing sale by the Friends will be considered at next month's meeting.
