Newsletter Issue 114 February, 1998 Election of Officers At this year's Annual General Meeting, the Friends received, with regret, the resignation of our President, Eileen de Bues, and elected the following officers: President; Joanna Knight Vice President: Ted Hill Treasurer: Ron Lucas Secretary: Marie Evans A few words of well earned praise for Eileen de Bues who, for eight years - 1990 to 1997 -guided the Friends of the library through an exciting time in the life of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. Under her chairmanship, the Friends made substantial financial contributions towards the many new services and amenities that the larger Library space now allows. Much credit goes to Eileen for the smooth running of our constantly expanding fundraising events. She ensured that no organizational detail was overlooked, whether in preparation for a sudden influx of book sale patrons or a larger than usual stampede of hot coffee seekers on Remembrance Day. Her meetings were short but completely focused on matters at hand, and spiced with humour. Thank you, Eileen, for the dedication and energy that you contributed to our group in the past years. We enjoyed working with you. Meeting Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of The Friends, held on Wednesday, January 28, 1998, was extremely well attended. The following reports were presented: President's Report Eileen de Bues reported that: ♦ The Friends had enjoyed a happy and profitable year with over $14,000 donated to various Library projects, which included furnishings for the Musto Room and the Main Hall; a CD ROM collection for the Youth Services Department; a donation to the Summer Reading Club; the purchase of a new laminator, and the funding of professional assistance for the Library user survey. ♦ The new style newsletter, under the direction of Betty Neilson, Ted Hill and Joanna Knight, has received excellent comments. ♦ The 1197 Book Sale, once again master-minded by Wanda Osborne, was even more successful than ever, and in excess of $8,000 was raised. Eileen expressed thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the Sale such a worthwhile event. ♦ The Art Receptions that Elsa O'Connor and her team manage so well are a successful ongoing activity. ♦ Deliveries of books and "listening books" to homebound and sight impaired patrons are much appreciated services provided by the Friends. ♦ During the year we were able to offer assistance to the Foundation in hosting John Crosbie's presentation and booksigning at the West Van. Secondary School. ♦ The long awaited "Casino Nights" held on December 12, 13 and 14 were well organized and went very smoothly. ♦ The Friends were again honoured to be able to organize the Remembrance Day reception on behalf of the Library.
