Treasurers of our Memorial Library Among the treasurers of our library already extolled in our monthly newsletters are some which certainly do not appeal to all ages. For example, consider the laminator. It's a beautiful machine - true! It is admired and cherished for what it can do. But one could hardly say it tugs at the heart strings. The subject of this article, however - Norris's great cartoon panel -- can be guaranteed to evoke reactions of delight and amusement among library users of any age. This great work of art now hangs above the east end of the Young Adults floor. It has temporarily replaced another of our great treasures - the fine tapestry of "Mother and Child" -which at present decorates a wall in the Reference Section. Len Norris, who was surely among the top-rank cartoonists of our entire country, was fond of our library. The reverse was also abundantly true, as "his" file in our Reference Section shows. Nevertheless, the history of this great drawing, or print, is a bit elusive. Norris drew the original in 1960 to mark the library's tenth anniversary. It was published in "The Vancouver Sun", and certainly gave much pleasure to denizens of West Vancouver at that time. It seems likely that this splendid enlargement now gracing our library was printed by "The Sun", and presented to the library. It was printed on heavy paper. Just how and when the print came to us seems to be unrecorded. However, it was found, quite by chance, by staff member, Cheryl McGregor, wrapped and stored in the library's Reference Section. This very lively cartoon depicts a busy scene in the "Ambleside and Tiddlycove Branch of the West Vancouver Library", with seventeen or eighteen assorted characters milling about, around one serene librarian. Trying to count all these customers is reminiscent of searching for Waldo, in the children's books which hide him so skilfully. All the characters are masterful caricatures. Each of the adult customers clutches a book, and their titles present Norris's piquant sense of humour in its essence. Many target West Van. concerns with perfect aim. For example, "Beach Combing for Oil", or "For Whom the Bridge Tolls?" Or how about "Bridge Demolition for Beginners", by "P.G.E. Tressel"? Above the milling throng stretches a banner reading "10th Anniversary" -- The Most Busy Library in Canada!" What a glorious piece of memorabilia! A treasure indeed! Miscellany "Where have all the badges gone?......." We had 25 Friends name badges made in May, and now there are only four in the Peters' Room drawer. We particularly need these badges for our volunteers at the Casino, and again at the Christmas Party. We have declared an amnesty! Return the badges to Lillian's office, please, and no retribution will be invoked! We would like Members of the Friends to receive their copy of the Newsletter as soon as possible as it includes important dates for December. Because of the postal strike, Pat Scrivener and her telephone committee will | be calling each member to advise that their copy of is available for collection for the main desk at the Library entrance. If, while collecting your copy, you see envelopes there addressed to one or two of your neighbours, perhaps you would be kind enough to hand deliver them. The Library will be closed for Christmas from 9 pm on Tuesday, December 23 until 10 am on Thursday, January 2, 1998. So do remember to stock up with your holiday reading! We have no meeting in December, which means that our next meeting - which will be our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at 7 pm in the Peters Meeting Room Your Editorial Committee would like to wish you and your j families a very Happy Christmas Betty Neilson Joanna Knight Ted Hill
