In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place, and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. John McCrae was a Canadian Army Doctor in the First World War. His war medals were recently purchased for $400,000 by Toronto businessman Arthur Lee who, on November 6, donated them to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa where they were received on behalf of the nation by Prime Minister Jean Chretien. As Chaplain Ian Andrews said in his address, it is time now for the next generation to "take up the torch and hold it high". It was good to see so many young people on Remembrance Day, both participating in and watching the ceremony. The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wednesday November 26 at 7 pm in the Peters Meeting Room Betty Neilson Joanna Knight Ted Hill
