Casino Our February application for a Casino licence is now receiving active consideration by the B.C. Gaming Commission. Although we have yet to learn the outcome of their deliberations - and thus the date(s) of such event - we MUST recruit and coordinate volunteers now. It is possible that we will be awarded a three-day casino, so we need many, many volunteers! Participation in this event represents one of the most direct ways in which we can support our Library - i.e. by helping to raise funds. So please telephone as soon as possible to take advantage of this great volunteer opportunity: Carmina Davila - 925 6717 Joanna Knight - 925 8644 A few of our members who volunteered very early on are now undertaking a casino volunteer orientation programme and they, in turn, will be holding briefing sessions for all volunteers. It's going to be fun, so please do get in touch with Carmina or Joanna. Membership Welcome to new member Bernice Gordon who joined us in October. Bernice, it was good to see you at our October meeting and on Remembrance Day. Membership now numbers 124. Friends' Financial Support At our October meeting, The Friends agreed to make two purchases for the Reference Section: ♦ Encyclopaedia of Human Biology (nine volume set). Cost: $1,7990. ♦ Routledge Encyclopaedia of Philosophy. Cost: $3,500 By ordering these publications now, we have been able to take advantage of the pre-publication prices listed above, both of which are before taxes. We will place our "Friends of The Library" book plates in each volume before they are put on the shelves. "The Encyclopaedia of Human Biology, Second Edition, presides complete coverage of the vast subject area of human biology - no other reference work available offers such a detailed and comprehensive treatment of the subject, including more than 670 articles in 37 different biological fields, this fully revised edition features one of the most renowned editorial Advisory Boards ever assembled." ""In philosophy the questions stay the same, only the answers change" - so runs the old jibe. But now. With the end of writing in sight, it seems nearer the mark to say that almost all the answers change, along with half the questions. You can have the knowledge of a lifetime about philosophy. But you can't exhaust it - it just won't hold still long enough....." Memorial Library Art Gallery This month's exhibit features the work of two photographers -Sam Short and Sandi Wilson -and is well worth viewing. Again, Elsa O'Connor, thank you for arranging and hosting the opening reception. Miscellany On November 9, Friends Joanna Scott and Joanna Knight assisted members of the Memorial Library Foundation in selling tickets and hosting The Honourable John Crosbie's presentation of his biography "No Holds Barred: My Life in Politics" at the West Vancouver Secondary School Theatre. A very well attended, enjoyable and successful event. The West Vancouver Museum and Archives need volunteers for their education programme. If you have any free time to donate, please telephone Dave Plouffe at 925 7295.
