Newsletter Issue 112 November 1997 Lest We Forget They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain. from "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon (Poet Laureate) 1869-1943 Our Library was founded as a Memorial to honour those of West Vancouver who gave their lives during the 1939 -1945 War so that future generations would have the freedom to pursue knowledge without let or hindrance. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - Remembrance Day -Tuesday, November 11, 1997 -West Vancouver stood in silence in brilliant sunshine to honour the fellow members of our community who gave their lives in the great wars of this century. The Reviewing Officer was Cde Fred Connett, a Veteran of the First World War. There was a fly past of WW2 aeroplanes. Chaplain Cde Ian Andrews conducted the service at which we sang the hymns "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" and "Abide With Me". The Last Post was played by bugler Cde Gerry F. McCann, and the Lament by Piper Graham Pitches, following which the wreaths were placed. Our own West Vancouver Memorial Library wreath was laid by Chief Librarian, Ann Goodhart. Following the service, those gathered to commemorate the fallen met in the Library to exchange reminiscences; to renew acquaintances; and to view the Book of Remembrance which is open for viewing on this one day of the year. They enjoyed the reception hosted by members of the Friends at which coffee, tea, juice and cookies were served, with entertainment provided by the Ambleside Orchestra. A vote of thanks to Eileen de Bues for her overall management of the reception; to Brendan Rowell for organising the rental equipment; to Pat Scrivener who coordinated the volunteers; to Wayne Leigh-Spencer and Natalie Logan for organising the refreshments; to Mary Pearson for her lovely floral arrangements 'for each table; to all our volunteers; and to members of the Library's staff for setting up the tables, chairs, etc. This annual reception continues to play an important part in West Vancouver's community calendar as it has since our Library opened on Remembrance Day, 1950.
